Verizon Motorola Droid 4 available Feb. 10 for $199 on contract
The Motorola Droid 4 will be available on Verizon starting Feb. 10. It'll run $199 with a two-year contract.
The Droid 4, as you'll recall from our hands-on at CES, brings along the Droid RAZR MAXX design and throws in a redesigned five-row keyboard for good measure. They keys are "laser cut" (for what that's worth), and Motorola's backlit them, which is a nice touch. They've got a nice feel to them and are well-spaced. Pair that with all the tweaks Motorola has added to Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread (the phone has been promised an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich) and throw in 4G LTE data (it's the first in the original Droid line to have LTE), and you've got the makings of what should be a popular device among the business set thanks to some government-grade encryption, and it's got Citrix preloaded as well.
Other specs of note include a 4-inch qHD display and 8-megapixel rear camera. One thing to remember is that the Droid 4 has a 1785 mAh battery -- but like the original Droid RAZR, you can't remove it. Place your bets now on whether we see a Droid 4 MAXX with a monster battery in the coming weeks. (We kid, we kid. Maybe.)
We've got Verizon's complete presser after the break.

There's no way Verizon's VDay Confessions contest could get risque, is there?
Oh, this could get good. Verizon's cooking up a little Valentine's Day contest, wherein you can win a Motorola DROID RAZR. (Not a new RAZR MAXX? Lame.) The contest kicks off Feb. 13 and runs through Valentine's Day. To enter, you'll have tweet a "creative" Valentine's Day confession -- poems and pics are suggested -- and tag the stories with #tweetheart.
So, ya know, you could say something nice about your sweetie, something about along romantic dinner, maybe a walk through the park. Or we could well see sordid tales from the Red Light District. Because this is, after all, the Internet.

Verizon’s ZTE V66 Tablet Pictured – Dual-cores and 4G LTE Capability
It was a few months ago we told you guys about the mysterious ZTE V66 tablet that passed through the FCC, on its way to Verizon. Now, that same tablet has popped again, this time, on a trip to the Bluetooth SIG. We now have a little more info on the device but don’t get it confused for the Sprint ZTE Optik that was leaked a few days ago, the V66 is packing a little more power under the hood.
The ZTE V66 will feature a 7-inch, 1280×800 resolution display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Android 3.2 Honeycomb and full Verizon 4G LTE capabilities. Looks wise, it’s your typical Android fare but really, there’s only so much you can do with a rectangle.
We still have no word on the device’s launch name or exactly when we’ll see this tablet arrive on Verizon Wireless, but let’s hope they can keep the same $99 price point as it’s V55 Sprint cousin (doubtful). What do you guys think? Would, or would not?

HTC Rezound gets maintenance update from Verizon

Verizon Wireless has rolled out a new document that reveals more details on the company’s handsets, where one of them would be the HTC Rezound that is in line for a new update. Of course, you can forget about Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich at the moment, but it is said that this particular maintenance update will help fix some of the nigging faults and errors that the smartphone has, and hopefully remove some stress for HTC Rezound owners. Should you not receive the update notification just yet, be patient – it might just happen within the coming few days, where the update is said to fix the signal strength meter to 5 bar, as the baseband is updated to version 0.95.00.1118r while the software update is bumped up to version 2.01.605.11.
Screen timeouts when connected to a Wi-Fi network, in addition to Mobile Hotspot data stalling whenever multiple users are connected have also been resolved. It is said that audio quality during calls have also been improved, and there is a reduction in the number of force closes related to the People application. Overall, your HTC Rezound should be far more stable than usual, and those who have already made the maintenance update, how do you find it so far?

Verizon’s HTC ThunderBolt free on contract through January 26th
Your prayers have been answered if you’ve been looking for a 4G LTE without having to empty out your wallet. Verizon’s first 4G LTE phone, the HTC ThunderBolt, is now free with a two-year contract through January 26th. The ThunnderBolt was first announced last year during the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show and it’s a bit slower than the high-end smartphones on the market today. It offers a 1 GHz Snapdragon chip instead of the dual-core 1.4GHz processor that’s included in top-of-the-line Android devices. However, it’s also equipped with an 8-megapixel camera, a 4.3-inch display with an 800 x 480-pixel resolution and more. With Mobile World Congress right around the corner it’s tough to commit to a two-year contract with a year-old smartphone, but users on a budget might be happy to forgo the bells and whistles in an effort to save a little cash.

Verizon Making Big Moves – Is Currently In Talks To Buy Netflix
Looks like Verizon could be in more talks than just Redbox to offer streaming content. Now, Bloomberg is reporting that Verizon is “very serious” about a bid to actually take over Netflix to the tune of $4.6 billion. Verizon wants streaming video content and they want it now. Whether it’s from Netflix or Redbox (or both?) remains to be seen with sources within Verizon saying they’ll take Netflix or “something similar.” As long as there are no bumps in the road, the Netflix deal could go through as early as Easter of next year. Let’s just hope that if this deal does pan out, Verizon doesn’t try to keep Netflix all to themselves.

AT&T and Verizon testing 4G LTE Nokia Lumia 800
Word on the street is that AT&T and Verizon are both testing out a 4G LTE version of the Nokia Lumia 800 for their future respective roster. We first saw this device back at Nokia World in London and it is already available throughout Europe. The device is expected to hit the US early 2012, most likely at CES 2012 in early Janurary.
We still aren’t quite sure exactly when Windows Phone devices will be ready to handle dual-core processors and LTE since there is no release date on Tango, the next update for Windows Phones. Verizon lacks a Windows Phone device in its lineup since it is waiting for an LTE WP7 device indefinitely. AT&T has a nice selection of Windows Phone 7 currently available, but the Nokia Lumia 800 will likely be the flagship device for either carrier.
It will be interesting to see how this testing goes and whether or not we will see a Lumia 800 on a carrier anytime soon. We will keep you updated on the status of the Nokia Lumia 800.

Verizon Allegedly Getting the Galaxy Tab 7.7
To add to their family of Galaxy devices (which still doesn’t include the Galaxy Nexus yet) it has been revealed that Verizon may be gearing up for a 4G LTE release of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7. For some people, a 7 inch device is far more ideal size-wise than a 10.1 inch devices which is why we always appreciate options. For those who think Verizon’s current offerings are a tad unwieldy you might be seeing something in your range sometime soon. We just have to figure out when

It’s not quite the Galaxy Nexus but the Motorola Droid XyBoard is now officially available from Verizon Wireless. A quick visit to Verizon’s site will give you all the information you need to know on the pair of Honeycomb tablets. The Droid XyBoard comes in a few different varieties; first we have the 8.2-inch model with 16GB for $430 or 32GB for $530; 10.1-inch model comes with 16GB for $530, 32GB for $630 or 64GB for $730. Both models of the Droid XyBoard feature a 1.2GHz Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, 5MP rear camera with matching front facing camera, Android 3.2 Honeycomb and of course, compatibility with Verizon’s 4G LTE network. Verizon drops Google Wallet
We have heard our fair share of news about Google Wallet including Google themselves confirming that the Galaxy Nexus will not be receiving the Google Wallet service at all. Well, it seems that Google is not the only one, as Verizon Wireless too, will be blocking the new Galaxy Nexus from carrying the Google Wallet service, which means the smartphone will not have a chance to establish itself as a credit card of the future. The main reason for Verizon’s action in doing so would be because they want to guarantee that they can offer “the best security and user experience” – not to mention the fact that Verizon as well as bitter rivals AT&T and T-Mobile USA are also part of a consortium known as ISIS, where they are working on their own payment system.
What do you think about this move – will it benefit Verizon in the long run, and how else do you see Google will work to make sure that Google Wallet ends up being secure and easy to use for the masses down the road?

Verizon Galaxy Nexus to retail for $299 on contract
We know pretty much everything about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus except its official price and release date on Verizon and well, today it looks like we can cancel one off the list (hint: it’s not the release date). According to the Wall Street Journal’s trusted sources, the upcoming Android Ice Cream Sandwich flagship device will be sold for $299 with a 2-year contract. This corroborates with previously leaked price of the phone, which makes sense considering that it is a top-of-the-line Android phone with 4G LTE, a 720p Super AMOLED display, Ice Cream Sandwich (currently the only phone being sold with it) and 32GB of internal storage. Now all we need is an official release date. What do you think of the Galaxy Nexus’ price? Will you be picking it up for $299 with a 2-year contract?

iPhone 4S best-selling phone at three top U.S. carriers in November, Samsung sales strong
Apple’s iPhone 4S was the best-selling smartphone at Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint in November according to a report released Monday night by Canaccord Genuity. According to checks performed by analyst Mike Walkley and his team, Apple’s iPhone 4S remained a top-seller across the board while Samsung’s Galaxy S II picked up momentum ahead of the holidays. Samsung’s flagship handset was the top-selling smartphone at T-Mobile and it jumped up into the No.2 spot at AT&T. Sprint’s Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch was the second best-selling smartphone at Sprint as well in November, and Motorola’s DROID RAZR was No.2 at Verizon Wireless. Read on for more.
“IPhone 4S sales strength continues as distribution increases – Our November checks indicated iPhone sales remained strong in the US, particularly at AT&T and Sprint. Further, our checks indicated strong global share gains,” Walkley wrote. “With the iPhone 4S launching in new markets including China, Brazil, and Russia during December, we anticipate strong December quarter iPhone sales and have increased our estimate from 29.0 to 30.5M units.”
The analyst also noted that Apple’s iPad 2 is still the world’s top-selling tablet, though he did lower his unit sales estimates to 13 million in the December quarter, down from an earlier estimate of 14 million units.
HTC lost share in November according to Walkley, in line with the expectations set last month when the Taiwan-based vendor cut its fourth-quarter forecast. “Our November checks indicated weaker sales trends for both RIM and HTC, consistent with negative pre-announcements from both companies, as we believe weak trends are company-specific for both OEMs rather than indications of a weaker smartphone macro,” he wrote in his report. “Our checks indicated HTC has lost significant share at all four US carriers following the iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S II launches.”
Walkley’s checks also indicated that sales of BlackBerry smartphones in the U.S. slowed significantly in November, with the high-end Bold 9900 in particular showing slowed adoption. “Following early strength for the Bold 9900, our checks indicated BlackBerry sales slowed significantly during November due to high-end smartphone share losses combined with lower-priced Nokia feature-phones and sub-$200 Android smartphones adversely impacting BlackBerry sales in emerging markets,” Walkley said.

Verizon Galaxy Nexus coming Dec. 8? These documents seem to say so
While we can't guarantee the validity of this document and e-mail leaked to RootzWiki, if they are true we should be seeing the elusive Verizon Galaxy Nexus this Friday, Dec. 9. The e-mail and PDF file state that stores will start receiving stock on Dec. 6, which we know is true, and they will have them on the shelves along with whatever fancy promotional materials there are to display Friday. Match that up with the fact that some Verizon stores are already selling accessories, and you have a very plausible situation. We hope it's true, you all hope it's true, but until we hear someone from Verizon say it on the record we have to go on hope alone. Hit the jump to see one more image you'll love.

Verizon Blocks Google Wallet From Galaxy Nexus – More Carriers To Follow
Androids around the internet are up in arms over the apparent confirmation ComputerWorld received today in regards to Verizon “blocking” Google Wallet on our beloved Galaxy Nexus. At first I was fuming out the mouth upon hearing this but after thinking about it — it actually doesn’t come as much of a surprise seeing how Verizon will be using an NFC-based payment system of their own from ISIS in the near future. And they’re not the only ones. AT&T and T-Mobile are a few other carriers all aboard with ISIS train and the reason why the GSM version of the Nexus S never saw Google Wallet when Google launched the app a few weeks back. So don’t go expecting a Google Wallet enabled Galaxy Nexus in the US anytime soon — not a carrier branded one at least. Just keep crossing your fingers the Galaxy Nexus will hit Sprint eventually (c’mon Dan Hesse!), the only carrier where Google Wallet can run free.
If you were really looking forward to using your Galaxy Nexus to make your very first NFC transaction at the few vending machines and retailers in your area, you always have the option of installing the cracked version of Google Wallet making the rounds in various forums around the net. Let’s just hope Verizon doesn’t go out of their way to block Google Wallet from showing up in Android Market if Galaxy Nexus users decide to go that route. Either way, I can’t help but find it a bit upsetting that once again, Google comes up with another great idea — only to have it shot down by carriers. Shame.
