US Cellular Officially Announced Samsung Galaxy S II

Even more announcements have made their way to our inbox. Samsung and US Cellular are announcing that the Samsung Galaxy S II will be headed to the regional carrier sometime soon. It’ll feature a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED Plus display, a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, Android 2.3 with TouchWiz, an 8 megapixel HD camera, 16GB of internal storage and more.

Without any 4G LTE radios, it’s possible that this could be an Exynos-equipped version of the handset, though the press release doesn’t say either way. US Cellular’s version might be very similar to Sprint’s in terms of style and features.
It wouldn’t be the first time that the carrier got phones that were exactly the same as other carriers’, save for the name and logo. It’ll be available for $230 after a $100 mail-in rebate. No exact window to look forward to yet but we imagine it will be here sometime within the first half of the year. Read on for full press details.

Samsung S-Cloud Launch Significantly Delayed




Sources are stating that Samsung’s new S-Cloud storage services official launch might be significantly delayed. Korean newspaper ETNews has today run a story saying that Samsung’s competing service to Apple’s iCloud has now been delayed significantly.





In a similar way to Apple’s iCloud, Samsung’s S-Cloud has been developed to connect all a user devices including Samsung smartphones, tablets, PCs, and TVs. But Samsung doesn’t want to stop there and hopes to be able to expand this to even more Samsung devices in the future such as printers, cameras, and appliances.

The delay in rolling out the new S-Cloud service seems to be associated with usability issues. But Samsung has yet to confirm or deny any delay or issues with their cloud storage product. The source that spoke to the newspaper explained that Samsung was having problems making the S-Cloud service work with the huge range of products Samsung is selling to consumers. As more information becomes available we will keep you updated.

Samsung Galaxy Note Review





Previously unknown to common man, Samsung has created its own multi-category device in the Galaxy Note. Either the biggest phone or the smallest tablet I’ve ever used, the Note sits on the edge of madness, but manages to be neither absurd nor unreasonable.
The high-resolution 5.3-inch screen and LTE capabilities are kept under control by a massive 2500mAh battery, while its Wacom-powered S-Pen tries to be more than just a built-in stylus. In Part One of this review, we’ll take  you on a hardware tour to see if this big phone is really a big deal.

Part Phone, Part Tablet
Here is a tale of a device too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet. Hence, a “phablet.” While the Note maintains many of the stylings that debuted with the original Galaxy S II last year, it would be safer to say that it is a giant Galaxy S II LTE, since its back cover and faux-metal chrome border pays tribute to its smaller cousin.
While made entirely of plastic, the quality of the materials has been improved considerably. Though much of this can be attributed to the mere size of the device, Samsung has not overlooked the need for a thicker battery cover, nor a more sound, creak-free body.
Like any Samsung, the power button is on the right while the volume rocker remains to the left, with a headphone jack on top and a microUSB port on the bottom. Eschewing the front-side hardware button for separate capacitive buttons was a choice likely necessitated by AT&T, since all its Android phones have dedicated search buttons, but I’m not too upset about the loss. Over time I found the Galaxy S II’s physical hardware button to give trouble, refusing to register a click that wasn’t exactly centred. This format eliminates that issue but also crowds what could have been a nicer layout. I am of the opinion that Android phones should not have dedicated search buttons, and an increasing number of OEMs seem to be agreeing with me.

The Note is surprisingly comfortable to hold despite its massive 147mm width, likely because it is under 10mm thick. It will fit into most pants pockets, though it may cause trouble in a tighter pair of jeans. Using the Note with one hand is decidedly more difficult: without massive thumbs and a double-jointed nature it won’t be possible to reach the top left of the screen without some serious maneuvering. This is most definitely a two-handed machine, and not just for typing. You’ll find it more comfortable to grab the Note between forefinger and thumb, as if you were holding a golf club, though this means your thumb will often be resting on the right (or left) side of the screen.
Using the Note as a phone means coming to terms with either looking like you have an absurdly small head, or investing in a good Bluetooth headset. There is no getting around this: your hand will cramp and feel uncomfortable unless it is large enough to wrap entirely around the device. Nevertheless, Samsung and carriers alike are marketing the Note as a smartphone, and for good reason.

Usability & Display
As I said, this is a two-handed device. But with such a large screen comes a significantly larger usable area, and Android is nothing if not adaptable. Instead of a 4×5 grid of icons, the Note’s TouchWIZ launcher is 5×5, expanding horizontally by one, and supports a wide range of larger widgets as a result.
The first thing you’ll notice when turning on the display is the ridiculous 284dpi pixel density; though slightly less than the Galaxy Nexus, the Note is no less vivid. With a notebook-like resolution of 1280×800 pixels, Samsung chose to make everything crisper instead of smaller. The usable area is greater, yes, but you’ll mostly notice the extremely sharp text and endless viewing angles. Like all Samsung AMOLED products, colours are vibrant to the point of saturation, while blacks are deep as the sea. Whites seem far more accurate than in previous Super AMOLED variants; even at half brightness they lack the blue tint of their lower-resolution peers.
Its screen is also sufficiently bright, matching the Galaxy Nexus in overall luminance. It does not compare to most Super LCD displays, but for daily indoor use the Note’s screen excels. Outdoors in direct sunlight I found the screen to be rather muted but still navigable.

The added screen resolution coupled with the larger screen size makes the Galaxy Note perfect for three things: web browsing, gaming and media consumption. Though the aspect ratio is slightly less “wide” than the Galaxy Nexus (16:10 compared to 16:9) it suits landscape use very well; unlike the more cumbersome 7-inch tablets of yore, the Note is very easy to cradle in one hand, and has enough of a bezel to avoid encroaching on the screen space. While it is possible to use a thumb to reach diagonally across much of the screen, there is little chance of that same hand holding and navigating the Android UI alone. This will become even more wearisome in Android 4.0 as many of Google’s own apps rely on a top-left “back” area that doesn’t always correlate to the action of the back button underneath the screen.
Typing on the Galaxy Note should be fantastic — big, sharp keys and plenty of room — but for whatever reason the stock Samsung keyboard isn’t as responsive as I’d like. After a couple sentences, the keyboard was having trouble keeping up with me. Thankfully the Note comes preloaded with Swype, and there are plenty of other fantastic third-party keyboards in the Marketplace like Swiftkey X, Smart Keyboard Pro and Thumb Keyboard.
The only negative thing I can say about the screen on the Galaxy Note is that it uses the PenTile matrix in its pixel makeup, meaning that instead of a full red/green/blue palette, it interleaves a number of smaller green pixels between the regular-sized blue and red. This creates an aliased look to text and disrupts the uniformity of certain colours. Though not nearly as noticeable as on the Motorola RAZR or earlier lower-resolution models, due to the size of the screen it is easier to see individual pixels.

Performance
Unlike the international HSPA+ version of the Galaxy Note, which uses a 1.4Ghz variant of the blazing fast Exynos 4210 processor, our LTE version uses sticks with the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. First used mid-2011 in the HTC Sensation at 1.2Ghz, it later got a speed bump to 1.5Ghz and has powered everything from the Galaxy S II LTE to the Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE.
Samsung was hamstrung into using this comparably slower SoC because it is the only one currently compatible die-compatible with Qualcomm’s own MDM9600 LTE chipset. While still a perfectly fast solution, the relatively slow GPU speeds are being met by the high-definition screen. As you can see by the benchmark results, when tested at its native resolution (Vellamo, Smartbench 2012) the Galaxy Note suffers a nasty performance hit. Resolution-agnostic tests, or ones that are done at WVGA resolution like Smartbench 2011, exhibit almost exactly the same performance as the Galaxy S II LTE, both of which are sorely beaten by the original Galaxy S II with the Exynos processor.
Most users won’t notice a performance hit between the original Galaxy S II and the Galaxy Note, or will be too blinded by the insane LTE speeds and gorgeous HD screen to notice, but it’s hard to avoid the fact that a brand new device being released at the beginning of 2012 is using the same processor as the Galaxy S 2 X released last summer. It’s the same issue I had with the Samsung Infuse 4G, which used an overclocked Hummingbird chip over a year after the release of the Galaxy S i9000.

Samsung loaded several of its recent ads, all encoded at 720p, and they looked absolutely amazing. The Snapdragon processor had no issues keeping up with the x.264-encoded clips, and frame rates stayed at a leisurely 24fps. General UI performance, too, was pretty snappy, with smooth window transitions and quick app load speeds.
Since the Note feels more like a small tablet than an oversized phone, I tried to use it as such: I watched a lot of live TV using the new Bell Mobile TV app, played a bunch of 3D games (Sleepy Jack! GTA 3!), loaded a ton of desktop-heavy web pages, read a chapter in Google Books, answered a few emails or tweets, and took a few notes with the S-Pen. I never quite shook the fact that what I could be doing was either better suited for a larger tablet screen, or would be less cumbersome on a smaller phone screen.
Performance-wise, though, it was rare for me to bemoan the Note’s internals as being insufficient. Being able to play back 720p content natively is fantastic, but the processor couldn’t keep up with anything of a higher resolution, namely 1080p movie trailers. Most games played flawlessly, including the very graphics-intensive Riptide GP, though frame rates did crawl in certain areas of GTA 3′s Liberty City. My issue with the Note is more philosophical than practical: for a device this expensive and top-of-the-line, there is no excuse to not include the best hardware in the business. Tegra 3 trounces the Snapdragon S3 across the board, and with the release of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 in mere weeks, the Note’s superior performance will shortly be surpassed.
Camera
The Note has a fantastic 8MP camera that, much like the Galaxy S II, is fast and colour accurate. In many ways the sensor equals that of the iPhone 4S, which is considered to have the best optics in the business. Even in low light the Note takes great stills, and when needed the flash does not overpower.
As you can see from the sample photos, there is plenty of detail and rich colour, though they do come at the expense of some artificial sharpness and grain. Holding the Note to take photos is a little awkward since cradling it with one hand between your thumb and middle finger, using your forefinger to take the shot, is difficult unless you have a second hand to support the left side. Supporting the bottom right side in you palm, supporting the top with your forefinger and using your thumb to take the photo is a bit easier for one-handed operation, but I always felt like the Note was about to drop out of my hand unless I held it steady with another.
The camera UI is unchanged from previous iterations of Gingerbread, which makes it minimal and simple. The right-side virtual shutter button, when held halfway down, will correct the white balance and focus, completing the shot when you take your finger off the trigger. It’s a good system that works most of the time. Unfortunately the screen itself cannot seem to keep up; the image on the screen only simulates the shutter half a second to a second later, which is disorienting. Nevertheless, you’ll be happy with the Note for still photos.
The Note comes with a comprehensive editor, too: once in the Gallery app you can crop, resize, rotate, add filters to, and share your photos to various apps. You can also use the S-Pen to draw on, or annotate, your photos, something I found increasingly useful as I thought of funny things to do with photos of cats.

The Note also takes 1080p video at 30fps, which looks just as great today as it did a 8 months ago on the Galaxy S II. Smooth is one story, but there is also minimal motion blur to be found. The lens adjusts well to changes in lighting, and Samsung employs some fantastic image stabilization technology to keep the results looking far less wobbly than my hands would suggest.
As with all recent Samsung devices, the 2MP front-facing camera is not only of higher quality than most of its peers, but using it on the Galaxy Note it’s actually more fun. As more apps like Skype and Google+ support video chats, a high-resolution front facing camera is going to be increasingly important. The Note works extremely well as a video chat solution since not only does recipient look great, but that little box in which you can see yourself is actually more than just a thumbnail.
Battery Life

Though there is a 2500mAh battery in the Galaxy Note, we must keep two important things in consideration. First, the 5.3″ 1280×800 pixel screen is a huge power draw, with over double the pixels of the Galaxy S II (1,024,000 vs 384,000). Second, the LTE chip inside the Galaxy Note is an independent, high-draw chip as it is not built into the CPU itself like most HSPA+ solutions. As a result, the Galaxy Note has the potential for largely the same or only slightly higher battery life than the average Android smartphone running Gingerbread.
However, since the average user doesn’t keep his or her screen on for more than a couple hours a day, nor watch movies on repeat until the battery dies, it’s safe to say the Note will last longer than your average smartphone. Whereas I achieved 6-8 hours of mid- to high-usage on the Galaxy S II LTE (which has a 1750mAh battery), it wasn’t uncommon for the Note to last nearly double that number, between 8-18 hours. The huge variation depended on a few things: the brightness of the screen, and whether LTE was enabled.
The Galaxy Note’s screen is very bright, even when set to Automatic. Lowering it to around 25% leaves it extremely readable for most indoor activities and saves an hour or so for every charge. So too does turning off LTE, though the battery saving potential is much higher here. After using the Note on Bell’s LTE network for five days, averaging between 8-12 hours depending on what I was doing, I turned it off to test its effect on battery life. The disparity was considerable: whereas on LTE the Note would be almost drained by 6pm (at 25% brightness), on HPSA+ the meter was hovering at 50%. Though there was a considerable drop in network speeds, I’d almost be inclined to suggest, unless LTE speeds are absolutely necessary, to use it on a need-by-need basis.
One also has to keep in mind that despite national availability of LTE devices, the networks themselves (across all three major carriers) are still being deployed, and signal strength is still a big problem. Where I live, just outside Toronto, both Bell and Rogers have limited LTE penetration. The harder a device has to search for a signal, the more battery life it will eat up attempting to keep it once it’s attained. In many ways, the Note will have improved battery life under LTE when A) the carriers launch their 700Mhz band after the auction and B) more towers are deployed in remote regions to handle increased load.
With a strong LTE signal, and brightness set to Auto, the Note lasted 4 hours 57 minutes looping a 720p video in the Samsung video app.

LTE speeds
As with any burgeoning network standard, Bell’s LTE network load is currently light, so top speeds are quite high. Unlike HSPA+ networks, LTE can manage very high speeds with 2-3 bars of signal strength, or RSSI levels lower than -100dBm.
On average, I achieved LTE speeds of between 20-30Mpbs download and 6-12Mbps upload, though the results depended heavily on where I was in the GTA and whether I was in- or outside. Since none of the networks are currently using the heavy wall-penetrating 700Mhz band, indoor signal strength tends to suffer. Luckily handover between LTE and HSPA+ is pretty seamless with only a fraction of a second between both.
LTE’s advantage on a mobile device shows itself most prominently when combining its superior download speeds with its extraordinarily low latency. This was put into practice when streaming HD video from YouTube, Vimeo, Netflix and Bell’s own Mobile TV app. Whereas on HSPA+ buffering a MB or two would take up to 10 seconds, eating into precious “time wasting” time, over LTE the same video would launch in half a second, at full HD quality.
I’ve spoken at length of LTE’s advantages and disadvantages. It’s really, really fast — at times more so than your home broadband — but that speed comes at the expense of battery life. Luckily turning off LTE and falling back to Bell’s 21Mbps HSPA+ network is effortless, but once you’ve had a taste of the good stuff it’s difficult to go back.
Call, Sound and Speaker Quality and Miscellaneous
The speaker on the back side of the Galaxy Note is loud. It’s also quite vibrant, which is a great deal more than I can say for 99% of the smartphones on the market. Samsung must have understood that the Note would be used as media consumption device, since you can easily fill a room with decent sound from the tiny mono speaker on the back of the device.
The experience of making calls, on the other hand, is merely good. Whether awkwardly holding up the Note to your ear, or connecting through a headset, Bluetooth or otherwise, callers sounded far away to me, and me to them. However, the quality itself is high, with no distracting sibilance, echoes or delays. The Note comes equipped with a second microphone for noise cancellation, though because many of my callers sounded so distant I can’t vouch for its usefulness.
Playing music from the headphones was also a good experience, though as you’ll see in Part 2 of the review Samsung has done little to nothing with the unsightly music app. WiFi, GPS, NFC and all other acronyms worked as expected, with no problems to report. It was nice to find that the Galaxy Note is dual-channel WiFi compatible, and connected to my 5Ghz WiFi network at wired-connection speeds.
The only issue I had with the connectivity was pairing and transferring files between the Note and my MacBook Air. Though the two devices would pair successfully, transferring a file would fail each time it was initiated. Similarly, I could not get my MacBook to “see” the photos on the Note when plugged in using USB using the MTP protocol. WiFi Direct also failed across all devices. Connecting directly to a Windows PC fixed the problem, but considering Google’s own OS X-compatible Android File Transfer app wouldn’t even acknowledge the Note’s existence, I worry for Mac users. There are certainly other ways to connect (WiFi File Explorer Pro!) but the basic methods need to work, period.
Part One Conclusions
Yes, yes. We haven’t talked about the S-Pen, nor Samsung’s alterations to TouchWIZ 4. That is coming in Part Two.
But if you were to omit the second part, and consider buying the Note on the merits of its “phone” hardware alone, it would be a difficult decision. For starters, the Note is easily the most well-made Galaxy device to date. It has a gorgeous, business-friendly backing, a chrome bezel that is more tasteful than garish, and a stunning 720p screen. It’s hard to find fault in the 5.3-inch HD Super AMOLED display in spite of the PenTile formation; colours are vibrant, blacks are deep and whites more accurate than any previous Samsung device.
Internally things are a bit more same-same. Its 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S3 processor has been used in everything from the Galaxy S II LTE to the Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE. It mimics much of what made the international Note, with its Exynos, so attractive, but there is evidence that the CPU/GPU combination can’t now, and won’t in the future, be able to keep up with next-generation Android chips. That would be fine if those solutions were coming in six months or a year, but they’re not. Phone with the quad-core Tegra 3 should be available in April or earlier, while Qualcomm’s own S4 chips with built-in LTE are expected no later than June.
One must also consider whether the size of the Note is a barrier for practical, daily enjoyment. Sure, the novelty of a HUGE PHONE might lure you to the cash register, but most people are going to be signing a 3-year contract, and some (gasp!) may even use it for the duration. The wow factor is obvious; less so is the potential for weariness.
As we’ll go over in Part Two, the Galaxy Note is more than just a phone/tablet hybrid. Samsung says the S-Pen is an integral part of the experience and we’ll take a look at whether that’s true, what other goodies the Note has in store, and when we can expect an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Sprint working on an official Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Samsung Epic 4G Touch




Since the Samsung Galaxy S II is going to beupdated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwichstarting next month, its various versions introduced around the world should be updated, too, at some point.

In the US, it looks like Sprint is already testing Android 4.0 for its Samsung Epic 4G Touch SPH-D710.

A user over at the XDA Forum has discovered an RDF page on Sprint’s website, which suggests an Android 4.0.3 build is currently being tested on the Epic 4G Touch. Unfortunately, there’s no way of telling when Sprint and Samsung plan to officially release the update.



Sprint is currently selling the Samsung Epic 4G Touch for $199.99 on contract, in either black or white. Later this year, the carrier is going to launch the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which will run Android 4.0 from day one.

Galaxy Mini 2 S6500 Image Leaked



After the successful release of Samsung Galaxy Mini S5570 last year, it seems that most of this phone enthusiasts are anticipating for the next sequel. An image was sent by a tipster, and it’s named the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 S6500, with the codename Jena.



As expected, improvements were made on this new device. You can experience more on its wider 3.3” screen and higher resolution. This new Samsung phone is now running on an800MHz processor and equipped with spacious memory storage at 3 GB. It’s still keeping the 3MP camera and its 7.2 Mbps HSDPA connectivity which was based from the previous edition. Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 S6500 will be using Android 2.3 GingerBread as its OS.

It’s said to be released next month. No word out yet though on how much it will be and which regions it will be available. Catch it at your local carrier because it’s likely to be rebranded anyway.

Comparision Sony Xperia S vs Samsung Galaxy S2

We throw Sony's new Xperia S into the ring with the Android platform's reigning champion – the Samsung's Galaxy S2 – to see which handset is the best going into 2012.

The Samsung Galaxy S2 launched this time last year but it's still up there as one of the more attractive looking handsets on the market with its imposing proportions and more angular styling.
Overall the design is minimalist, which makes everything look clean and modern, though it does have a textured back panel to spice things up a little.
The Sony Xperia S is a much striking device with next to no curvature or softening on the corners. In contrast to this the backpanel is completely smooth, which does provide some interesting contrast.
The other significant visual tweak is that the screen takes precedence over the bodywork, leading to a very thin bezel and a more ‘premium' look and feel.
We think Sony's device looks much smarter.

DisplaySamsung is traditionally pretty consistent at producing some top quality displays for its devices, so much so that other manufacturers, such as Nokia, even buy them for their own handsets too.
The Galaxy S2 uses Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus technology, which offers excellent picture quality, brightness, colour depth and is a bit more battery friendly than your avergae LCD panel.
The 4.3-inch multi-touch capacitive display is also reinforced with Corning's impressively resilient Gorilla Glass and boasts an 800x480 pixel WVGA resolution, giving a pixel density of 217 pixels-per-inch (ppi).
However Sony seems keen to take the South Korean manufacturer down a peg or two.
The Xperia S's display measures the same 4.3-inches as its Samsung rival and while its not Super AMOLED Plus, it still uses a fancy LED backlit LCD screen resulting in some sharp imagery.
As might be expected it's multi-touch capable, but what you might not expect is support for all 10 of your digits.
We can't quite fathom what kind of app we might need all 10 for but we suppose it's always nice to have the option and its certainly not something we're going to hold against the Xperia S.
It's also scratch-resistant and boasts a very impressive resolution of 1280x720 pixels, which is not something you see very often on a smartphone.
The pixel density comes at an astounding 342ppi, which is higher than even the Apple iPhone's acclaimed, and significantly smaller, Retina display.
We have to commend Sony here for producing a brilliantly high-spec display.
Winner - Sony Xperia S
StorageSamsung's Galaxy S2 has two storage options. You've got a choice of either 16GB or 32GB and either one you choose comes with 1GB of RAM and a microSD slot for up to an additional 32GB of card storage.
Sony's new handset only has the one option but it's an ample 32GB and 1GB of RAM. Unfortunately, Sony has decided to forego the usual card slot on this particular model, which is a bit of a shame.
Samsung is holding the trump card for this round with its microSD capability.
Winner - Samsung Galaxy S2

ProcessorInside the Galaxy S2 is a 1.2GHz dual core ARM Cortex-A9 processor running on Samsung's brilliant Exynos chipset alongside a Mali-400MP graphics processing unit (GPU).
It might not have the fastest clock speed on the market but thanks to the chipset and GPU combo this setup is still one of the better performing hardware configurations currently available.
The Xperia S is also a dual core device loaded with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm processor on the MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset and features Qualcomm's new Adreno 220 GPU, which should pack quite a punch. 
We think this qualifies as a draw as both phones are capable of high-end performance.
Winner - Draw
Operating SystemBoth handsets are currently running Android 2.3 Gingerbread but are due to be updated to Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0 at some point this year, which should offer a performance boost and a much quicker and more intuitive user interface.
These devices are on an equal footing in this context as well.
Winner - Draw
CameraThe Samsung Galaxy S2 may not have the absolute best 8-megapixel camera out there but it's certainly one of the better ones available, showing the majority of contemporary handsets how it's done.
The resolution clocks in at 3264x2448 pixels and camera features include 1080p video capture, an LED flash, geo-tagging, autofocus, touch focus, image stabilisation and face and smile detection. There's also a reasonably good 2-megapixel secondary camera on the front.
Sony has come straight out of left field with the Xperia S, taking no prisoners with a 12-megapixel beast of a primary camera sporting a 4000x3000 pixel resolution and an Exmor R CMOS sensor.
Features wise it has the same setup as the Galaxy S2 for still images, plus the addition of 3D ‘sweep' panoramic capture.
Again, we were impressed with the quality of its predecessor, the Xperia Arc S, in this category and with that pedigree it should deliver some pretty snazzy pictures.
For video it can capture in 1080p on the primary camera and features continuous autofocus, a video light and video stabilisation. The 1.3-megapixel secondary camera can also capture video in 720p.
Sony is offering one of the most competitive camera set-ups we've seen for some time on the Xperia S so we've no qualms about voting it the winner in this round.

Final Thoughts
Sony has come close to toppling Samsung's Galaxy S2 from its perch. It doesn't quite achieve this and we'd mainly pin that on the lack of a microSD card so instead it ends up sitting awkwardly on the same branch in this weird phones-as-birds metaphor we've created.
Regardless, It's on an equal footing in terms of the operating system and processing power but has sharper looks, a far superior camera and a much better display.
All in all we have to say that if we were pushed we'd likely go with the Xperia S over the Galaxy S2.

LG Optimus Vu does a photo shoot alongside its biggest competitor



In case LG Optimus Vu's teaser from a couple of days ago got you curious how a 4:3 aspect display might look like, we have some good news for you. A photo of the device has emerged, where you can see LG's upcoming phone/tablet pose next to its biggest competitor (or inspiration?) - the Samsung Galaxy Note.






As you can see from the photo above, the screen of the newcomer is wider than the unit of the Galaxy Note, despite its smaller diagonal - all thanks to its 4:3 aspect ratio.

A screenshot from the LG Optimus Vu from the same source hints at its software capabilities too. The phone will likely do some tricks, which will resemble the Samsung Galaxy Note's functionality.



We haven't learned more about the specs, than we know already. They include a 1.5GHz, dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8 megapixel camera, 8GB internal memory, NFC, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and the impressive 5" IPS display with 1024 x 768 pixels resolution.

It shouldn't be a surprise if we see the LG Optimus Vu break cover during MWC at the end of this month. Naturally, we will update you accordingly the moment we find out

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich hitting the Samsung Galaxy S II on March 1st

Put on your rumor hats, folks, as we have a nice one for you today. Eldar Murtazin has once again tweeted the deets about Samsung’s plans and this time it’s concerning the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Galaxy S II.
According to Murtazin’s tweet, Galaxy S II users can expect to see the rollout of Ice Cream Sandwich on March 1st through Samsung Kies. This would definitely be quite a treat for users but we’re going to assume that if the update is available on March 1st, it will likely be limited to the international GSM version only. It looks like Samsung has learned its lesson from previous mistakes when it comes to updating its handsets in a timely fashion but we would seriously be floored if the update was available to US Galaxy S II owners on March 1st as well.
Expect all of that Ice Cream Sandwich look and feel to be mostly concealed by Samsung custom user interface, TouchWiz. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you like the custom UI, which isn’t the worst we’ve ever seen but you’ll be a bit disappointed if you’re expecting Android 4.0 to shine through a lot. We do know that Google is attempting to make certain elements of the operating system consistent from device to device, but this is limited to certain applications and menus for the time being.
If we can’t get the Galaxy S III during Mobile World Congress, then maybe Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S II will hold some over until the time comes. Either way, we’re just glad to see Ice Cream Sandwich going to a handset that’s not a part of the Nexus line officially.
We’ll be in Barcelona during March 1st, so there may be a chance that we get to see some Ice Cream Sandwiched Galaxy S II devices floating around in that time. Stay tuned!

Review-Samsung Galaxy Pro



Samsung's Galaxy range continues to pull in the punters, and the Galaxy S2 is undeniably one of the most sought-after phones on the planet right now. However, as if to prove that not everything the Korean company touches turns to gold, we've been given the runt of the litter - the disappointing Galaxy Pro.
Clearly intended to steal some of RIM's thunder, this Android-powered BlackBerry rival boasts a 39-button qwerty-keypad, a fact which will instantly make it appealing to keen texters and typists. The keypad is unquestionably the handset's highlight as it's comfortable to use and makes typing a real pleasure, even if you're used to touch-screen interfaces.
Of course, by including such a large number of physical buttons, Samsung has been forced to cut corners elsewhere. The 2.8-inch landscape screen is pretty poor, with a low resolution of just 320x240 pixels. This means images look blocky and ill-defined and the screen itself has a washed-out appearance. Compared with the Super AMOLED displays featured on some of the other Galaxy-branded devices, the Galaxy Pro's screen is a real letdown.
The fact it has a landscape orientation rather than the traditional portrait one also causes headaches. A lot of Android apps and games aren't designed to work in landscape mode, which means you'll have to awkwardly hold the phone sideways to use them, which is hardly ideal. This shortcoming is a direct result of including all those lovely buttons; if the display had been turned the other way around, the Galaxy Pro would have been a much longer device.

The final insult, as far as the display is concerned, relates to the quality of the touch tech used. Although the display is capacitive - which offers superior responsiveness over cheaper resistive touch panels - it lacks multi-touch capability. This means you can't use pinch-to-zoom commands to make images, websites and maps larger, and it also makes games like Angry Birds insanely difficult to play, as they rely heavily on multi-touch gestures.
Performance wise, the Galaxy Pro holds few surprises. It has a 800MHz processor, which puts it above most budget Android phones but sadly still isn't powerful enough to handle Adobe Flash. The low resolution of the screen means navigating around the menu system is actually pretty nippy, but we'd rather have had more display detail if we're honest.
Another gripe is the inclusion of Android 2.2: with so many other phones sporting 2.3, it's galling to have to use an outdated version of Google's OS.


The Galaxy Pro is clearly intended as a mid-range device and it shows from the materials used in its construction. There's a spot of chrome here and there, but it's not metal, merely shiny plastic. The back of the handset sports the now traditional ‘bump' at the bottom, and the textured battery cover improves grip.
Although it possesses reasonably appealing design, the phone feels a little cheap and nasty. At least the overall weight of 103 grams means it won't rest heavy in your pocket.
Thanks to its 3.15-megapixel camera, the Galaxy Pro manages to pull back a little bit of respectability. It captures decent snaps, even if they have a tendency to be a little dull at times. The inclusion of auto-focus makes close-up photography possible, but the lack of an LED flash means you'll need decent lighting at all times.

Video recording is uninspiring - VGA quality is the best you can hope for. Needless to say, you shouldn't rely on this phone to capture your tender family moments unless you're a fan of abstract art made up of fuzzy pixels.
Despite the bold moniker, the qwerty-packing Galaxy Pro feels amateurish. It's saddled with outdated software, a rubbish screen and a so-so CPU. If you're looking for an Android device just to text and email on, then you may find the Galaxy Pro to your liking. However, the real fun of using a smartphone comes from the myriad applications, such as browsing the web, using Google Maps, downloading games and so on. The Galaxy Pro isn't particularly adept at any of these tasks, which kind of misses the point of having Android on there in the first place.
Some would argue there's little need for Android phones to compete with the BlackBerry line, and the Galaxy Pro certainly backs up this sentiment. It's a confused device that has too many shortcomings to justify the inclusion of the admittedly decent qwerty keypad. If you like your buttons then we'd recommend you pick a phone like the HTC ChaCha, which isn't without its faults but offers a much better experience than the Galaxy Pro.

White Samsung Galaxy Nexus Start Shipping From Some Retailers




Samsung recently announced the new white Galaxy Nexus, and the device is due to go on sale next Monday on the 13th of February, but it would appear that some online retailer have already started shipping out the device to their customers.

The white Samsung Galaxy Nexus shares the same specifications as the original Galaxy Nexus, with a 4.65 inch HD display which features a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.



Processing on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is provided by a dual core 1.5GHz processor and it also features 1GB of RAM, plus two cameras for video chat and recording video and taking photos.

On the front of the Galaxy Nexus there is a 1.3 megapixel camera, and on the back their is an advanced 5 megapixel camera which is capable of recording full high definition video in 1080p.

Sony Xperia S vs Samsung Galaxy S Advance

Samsung's Galaxy S Advance is based on the same shell as the original Galaxy S so its design is well over a year old now. Yet it still holds up quite well alongside the current crop of smartphones.
It's still one of the lighter and thinner handsets around and the simple slab-like design with slightly curved corners looks as contemporary as ever.
We do prefer it, however, when designers get a bit more adventurous and generally speaking you can rely on Sony to step up to the plate.
The Xperia S is a much sharper looking piece of kit although it is the heavier and thicker of the two devices here. It's got quite an angular form factor with un-softened corners.
There's also the rather nifty ‘band' round the bottom of the handset, a neatly uninterrupted and gently curved back panel and the screen takes up a nice amount of space on the front giving a very thin bezel.
Sony has produced a great looking device here and we have to put the Xperia S forward as the winner for this round.

DisplayThe Galaxy S Advance uses the same Super AMOLED capacitive multi-touch display as its predecessor.
It's a 4-inch span of reinforced Gorilla Glass with an 800x480 pixel WVGA resolution and a pixel density of 233 pixels-per-inch (ppi), a reasonably high figure still often unachieved by many current phones not based on a previous design.
However, Sony's Xperia S is no low-achiever when it comes to screen tech either, not by a long shot.
The Xperia S's 4.3-inch capacitive multi-touch screen is an LED backlit LCD with an impressive 1280x720 pixel resolution, which gives and iPhone Retina display-beating pixel density of 342ppi.
Not only that but it uses Sony's Mobile Bravia Engine, a scratch resistant coating and the multi-touch screen supports all 10 fingers should someone decide to release a Twister app at some point in the future.
The Xperia S easily wins this round, but that's not exactly surprising considering it sports a display which would shame most of the competition.

StorageSamsung's Galaxy S Advance comes in two variants with either 8GB or 16GB of onboard space along with 2GB of ROM and 768MB of RAM. Samsung's handset also has microSD capability for up to an additional 32GB.
The Xperia S only has one choice for memory but it's higher than the Samsung's at 32GB plus you get a whole 1GB to help with processing phone tasks. However, it doesn't have a card slot, which is a bit of a shame.
The Galaxy S Advance ends up with more storage to play with between the top-end 16GB option and 32GB card capacity, it doesn't have quite as much RAM as its opponent but it's not far off. We think on balance the Samsung wins this round but if the Xperia S had a microSD slot this would be a very different result.
Winner - Samsung Galaxy S AdvanceProcessor
Sony's new handset runs a Qualcomm quad core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and using the MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset. It also comes loaded with an Adreno 220 graphics processing unit (GPU) which is a higher-end version of the Adreno mobile GPU family and should give a boost to interface and gaming graphics.
Samsung's Galaxy S Advance has been upgraded from the original Galaxy S's single core roots to a new dual core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor running a NovaThor U8500 chipset and Mali-400MP GPU.
This setup features the same GPU found in the Galaxy S2 so it's pretty potent stuff, the NovaThor chip isn't quite as good as the S2's Exynos but it's still a modern piece of high performance tech which will give good results.
Bearing in mind that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S used a single core 1.4GHz processor with an Adreno 205 GPU and delivered excellent performance, we're expecting great things from the new Sony Xperia S as it doubles the cores, ups the clock speed and puts a much better GPU into the mix.
We think the Sony Xperia S may have the edge here, but rest assured the Galaxy S Advance isn't far behind and should also perform well.

Operating SystemBoth handsets ship with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The Xperia S is scheduled to receive Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0, Google's latest build, some time this year.
There's no word from Samsung on whether the Galaxy S Advance will get upgraded but we wouldn't be at all surprised as Samsung seems to be one of the more proactive manufacturers in rolling out system updates across its portfolio.
In the meantime, there's nothing to compare the two devices here.

CameraThe Galaxy S Advance sports the same 5-megapixel primary camera as the Galaxy S with a 2592x1944 pixel resolution and capable of 720p video capture. It also boasts a 1.3-megapixel secondary on the front. Features include an LED flash, autofocus, touch focus, geo-tagging and face and smile detection.
With the Sony Xperia S it's once again difficult not to reference the Xperia Arc S which had a very nice 8-megapixel camera which captured sharp photos and video.
The Xperia S looks set to improve on it though as it carries a 12-megapixel primary with a 4000x3000 pixel resolution and fitted with an Exmor R CMOS sensor.
Features-wise it has an LED flash, geo-tagging, face and smile detection, autofocus, touch focus, image stabilisation and a 3D panoramic capture mode.
Video capture is at 1080p and features video stabilisation, a video light and continuous autofocus. Lastly, the Xperia S has a 1.3-megapixel secondary camera capable of 720p video capture.
Understandably the Sony Xperia S walks away victorious from this round with a much more comprehensive setup which should be capable of capturing some pretty amazing images and videos.
Final ThoughtsWe're quite impressed with Samsung's re-boot of the Galaxy S, in the form of the Galaxy S Advance, it's a testament to how good the Galaxy S originally was when it launched over a year ago that a simple processor swap can make it a viable competitor in today's market.
However, Sony's Xperia S represents a phone at the forefront of current smartphones, or non-quad core ones at the very least.
Its main strengths are its phenomenal display and excellent camera setup, but as we mentioned if the Xperia Arc S is anything to go by the Xperia S will make the very best use of its ample processor setup and we expect it to outperform Samsung's offering here.
It also looks fantastic and is due to receive the newest version of Android which is way ahead of Gingerbread 2.3. Our only beef with it is the lack of microSD support and it's not enough to stop us recognising an otherwise great phone when we see one.
