Sprint announces ZTE Optik tablet, available February 5th for $99.99 on contract

Sprint on Thursday announced the ZTE Optik Honeycomb tablet. The 7-inch device will be available February 5th for $99.99 with a new two-year agreement, as previously reported. ”ZTE Optik is ZTE’s first tablet in North America and makes the tablet experience available to a new segment of consumers,” said Lixin Cheng, CEO and president of ZTE USA. “Paired with Sprint’s cutting-edge network, ZTE Optik provides an exceptional user experience to consumers who demand affordability, flexibility and mobility in one package.” The Optik features a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor with 16GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM. The device also contains a microSD slot, a 4,000 mAh battery, a front facing 2-megapixel camera and a rear 5-megapixel camera. The tablet will be available for $349.99 off contract and comes pre-loaded with Sprint Zone, Sprint TV, Sprint Music Plus, Sprint Navigation, Sprint Football Live and NASCAR Sprint Cup MobileSM. Sprint Offers $100 Promo To Keep Upgrade Eligible Customers From Saying Goodbye

You may remember from a previous post that because of change in Sprint’s terms, some Sprint customers were able to get out of their contracts early. Well, following that news, it seems Sprint is making moves to keep “upgrade eligible” customers from leaving by offering up discounts anywhere from $25, $50, to $100, all for remaining loyal to ‘Ol Yeller. While we’re not exactly sure of the criteria Sprint is using to select these lucky customers, (how many months do you need to be off-contract?), we find it interesting the timing of the promotion, where customers who’s contracts were affected by Sprint’s change in discounts gives them until the end of February to cancel ETF free.
Those that don’t have any intention of leaving may be able to cash in on this new promo, which when combined with an existing upgrade, offers a substantial discount on a new device. The offer begins Feb. 5th and will last until March 18th. Now might be a good time to call customer service to see if you apply. Keep in mind, taking advantage of Sprint’s promo offer will lock you in for another 2-years so choose your device wisely.

BlackBerry PlayBook and EVO View 4G to be phased out at Sprint

Sprint has updated the company’s end-of-life list to include two of its tablets. Shipments of the carrier’s BlackBerry Playbook and HTC EVO View 4G will come to a halt and supplies will run down within the coming weeks, according to the EOL list obtained by SprintFeed. Both tablets will be phased out by the end of of January, possibly leading to the announcement of an LTE tablet from the Overland Park-based company. At this year’s Consumer Electronics Show, Sprint announced two new LTE-powered smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper, which will launch some time this spring. The company is looking to roll out its 4G LTE network by mid-2012 in select locations.

Sprint rolling out updates for HTC EVO 4G, HTC Design 4G and Samsung Epic 4G

Sprint is rolling out updates for three of its smartphones, including the HTC Evo 4G, HTC Design 4G and Samsung Epic 4G, all of which will hopefully remove the Carrier IQ software (that’s what “Security Update” could be). Here’s what’s included with each device’s firmware update:
HTC Evo 4G

• Security Update
• Updated Peep client (to align with Twitter)
• Battery life improvements

HTC EVO Design 4G

• Security Update
• Updated Peep and Sprint Zone clients
• Battery life improvements
• 3LM Enterprise Tool Access (no user interface changes)

Samsung Epic 4G

• Security update
• Speaker feedback fix
• The QIK and Asphalt 5 applications are no longer preloaded – when tapping on their icons you will be redirected to the Android market to download them from there.

The updates are staged so if you still haven’t been prompted to update, your particular unit may get the new software in the next couple of days. That, however, doesn’t stop you from manually checking – tap Settings -> System update and then check for the new software version from there.

More Sprint Devices Receive Security Updates – HTC Evo and Design 4G Added To The Mix

The HTC Evo 3D has already received it’s “security update” removing that nasty Carrier IQ spyware from devices and staying true to their word, Sprint has already begun issuing updates for the rest of their Android lineup.
The HTC Evo 4G and HTC Evo Design 4G are next in line to receive their over-the-air updates and although “Carrier IQ” wasn’t specifically mentioned in the changelog, we expect that’s what is alluded to in “security.” You can see all the changes down below for yourself, along with more a little more detail to that upcoming Samsung Epic 4G OTA we told you guys about a few days ago.
We expect the Samsung Epic 4G Touch to receive the same treatment in the coming days. Sprint’s network can only handle so many updates. Baby steps, people…

iPhone 4S best-selling phone at three top U.S. carriers in November, Samsung sales strong

Apple’s iPhone 4S was the best-selling smartphone at Verizon Wireless, AT&T and Sprint in November according to a report released Monday night by Canaccord Genuity. According to checks performed by analyst Mike Walkley and his team, Apple’s iPhone 4S remained a top-seller across the board while Samsung’s Galaxy S II picked up momentum ahead of the holidays. Samsung’s flagship handset was the top-selling smartphone at T-Mobile and it jumped up into the No.2 spot at AT&T. Sprint’s Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch was the second best-selling smartphone at Sprint as well in November, and Motorola’s DROID RAZR was No.2 at Verizon Wireless. Read on for more.

“IPhone 4S sales strength continues as distribution increases – Our November checks indicated iPhone sales remained strong in the US, particularly at AT&T and Sprint. Further, our checks indicated strong global share gains,” Walkley wrote. “With the iPhone 4S launching in new markets including China, Brazil, and Russia during December, we anticipate strong December quarter iPhone sales and have increased our estimate from 29.0 to 30.5M units.”
The analyst also noted that Apple’s iPad 2 is still the world’s top-selling tablet, though he did lower his unit sales estimates to 13 million in the December quarter, down from an earlier estimate of 14 million units.
HTC lost share in November according to Walkley, in line with the expectations set last month when the Taiwan-based vendor cut its fourth-quarter forecast. “Our November checks indicated weaker sales trends for both RIM and HTC, consistent with negative pre-announcements from both companies, as we believe weak trends are company-specific for both OEMs rather than indications of a weaker smartphone macro,” he wrote in his report. “Our checks indicated HTC has lost significant share at all four US carriers following the iPhone 4S and Samsung Galaxy S II launches.”
Walkley’s checks also indicated that sales of BlackBerry smartphones in the U.S. slowed significantly in November, with the high-end Bold 9900 in particular showing slowed adoption. “Following early strength for the Bold 9900, our checks indicated BlackBerry sales slowed significantly during November due to high-end smartphone share losses combined with lower-priced Nokia feature-phones and sub-$200 Android smartphones adversely impacting BlackBerry sales in emerging markets,” Walkley said.
