Top 100 Windows Phone Apps



As Marketplace grows larger it can become increasingly difficult to find the cream of the crop, the best of the best apps.

Electric Pig has decided to save you the trouble of trawling through 65,000 apps by doing it themselves, and have come up with a list which they call the Best Windows Phone Apps of all time: Top 100.

The list contains some established favourites, such as Plants vs Zombies, but I think miss out on some pretty well known good apps, such as 4th and Mayor and Cocktail flow, amongst others.

Acer Unveils Liquid Glow and CloudMobile Smartphones


Just in time for Mobile World Congress, Acer has revealed two new Ice Cream Sandwich-powered smartphones — the Liquid Glow and Acer’s new flagship phone, the CloudMobile. Feeling bilingual? Check out the video below (in Italian) of the CloudMobile in action.





The Liquid Glow runs Ice Cream Sandwich and is powered by a 1-GHz Qualcomm 7227A processor and 512MB of RAM, with 1GB of storage capacity. The phone features a 3.7-inch 800 x 400 WVGA display. Its 5-megapixel camera uses an LED flash and supports panoramic image capture and a touch focus. Owners can expect NFC support in the form of Android Beam, a file sharing app native to Ice Cream Sandwich. The Acer Liquid Glow measures 4.6 x 2.3 x 0.45 inches and weights 4.4 ounces, and will be available in Sakura Pink, Alpine White and Cat’s-eye black.





Fewer details are available about the CloudMobile, which has been described as Acer’s flagship smartphone. The CloudMobile apparently runs on Android 4.0, and boasts a 4.3-inch 1280 x 720 display, Dolby Mobile audio, and a svelte chassis less than 10 millimeters thick. According to Acer, the CloudMobile is the first phone to utilize Acer’s proprietary AcerCloud technology, which allows for “seamless document management.” Engadget writes that the CloudMobile ispowered by a 1.5-GHz dual-core processor (the manufacturer wasn’t specified).

Acer demonstrated the CloudMobile at a press event in Milan, Italy. The folks at Cellular Magazine attended the event and shot a hands-on video with the device. Fair warning: The video is in Italian.


Rogers may announce Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S next week

According to a tip received by MobileSyrup, Rogers customers will soon be seeing the SE Xperia Arc S on the shelves. The Arc S is a slight bump from the current Xperia Arc that Rogers now offers with it's 1.4 GHz Qualcomm processor, and it's pretty likely that this will be the last Sony Ericsson branded device to hit North America now that Sony is sole owner of the name and franchisee. The Arc S is a lovely handset, and with Sony releasing a beta version of Ice Cream Sandwich already, it's going to be a fun one to play with. 
While it's always just a rumor until Rogers says differently, expect to see the Arc S next week with a possible price point of $30 (CAD) on a 3-year contract, or $475 (CAD) outright.

LG announces the Tegra 3-powered Optimus 4X HD

LG on Thursday unveiled its first quad-core smartphone, the Optimus 4X HD. The handset features a 1.5GHz Tegra 3 processor with a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The Optimus 4X HD will also come equipped with 16GB of internal storage, 1GB of RAM, a 2,150 mAh battery, an 8-megapixel rear camera a and 1.3-megapixel front facing camera. “LG introduced the world’s first Dual-Core smartphone exactly one year ago and today we’re announcing the next milestone,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Mobile. “But speed in itself isn’t what makes LG Optimus 4X HD unique, it’s the benefit we’re bringing to customers with the HD multimedia experience in a mobile form factor.” Even with a quad-core processor, the phone is expected have impressive battery life thanks to NVIDIA’s  ”4-PLUS-1″ design, which uses a fifth “companion core”  for low processing activities and allows the phone to save battery life. Droid X update v4.5.621.MB810 now rolling out to the masses



We've known now for quite some time that it was coming but for all you Droid X owners out there, the v4.5.621.MB810 update is now rolling out to the masses.  As noted in the change log, this release covers a lot of bug fixes:
  • Prevents lockups or resets after the Over the Air (OTA) update.
  • OTA update notice screen displays the correct estimated update time.
  • Improved browser security with the Google Security Patch from Android 2.3.6.
  • Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction.
  • Resolved possible device resets while playing music.
  • Adjusted camera settings will be saved, even after the device is powered down.
  • Reduced Out of Memory errors.
  • WAV files can be played from Visual Voice Mail.
  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • Improved stability of Music Player reduces resets.

It's not Ice Cream Sandwich sadly but it's a massive update either way. Go ahead and check for software updates, it should be there. White Motorola RAZR coming to Phones4U in the UK from Mar. 1

Not wanting to feel left out in the flurry of pre-MWC announcements, Motorola has revealed the availability of the international (GSM) RAZR in white in the UK, starting at Phones4U next Thursday, Mar. 1. As you might've guessed, it's the same Motorola RAZR that's been available in the UK since late November, with a funky white trim.
Phones4U appears to have scored brief timed exclusivity period with the white RAZR, so it's likely you'll need to pony up for a 1-2 year contract if you want one right away. But if you do manage to snag one between launch day and Mar. 25, you'll be entered into a draw to win tickets for the Snowbombing festival this April in Austria.
Phones4U's pre-order page shows the white RAZR as available for free on a number of contracts with O2, Orange and Vodafone. The best deal seems to be a £21.50 per month package with O2, offering 200 minutes, 3000 texts and 500MB, though Orange has triple the minutes and double the data allowance for £28.50 per month.

Here is a 4 minute video comparing the Nokia Lumia 800 and the Nokia Lumia 710. There was a similar video last week but now this one is in English. Even on video the CBD AMOLED makes quite a difference (and the 710 is quite a decent CBD LCD). The 800′s screen where the parts are black just melts in with the phone. It’s difficult to say where the screen begins.

OnLive Desktop Plus Brings Flash To The iPad For $4.99 Per Month

If you still haven’t gotten over the fact that your iPad doesn’t have Adobe Flash player, than OnLive Desktop Plus may soothe your pain. As you may have guessed, the new app is a premium version of OnLive Desktop, which brought Microsoft Office to the iPad earlier this year.
In addition to Office, the premium version offers Flash Player and a PDF-enabled web browser, but it comes at a price of $4.99 per month.
Like its free counterpart, the new app provides you with access to a PC in the cloud. When you open it up, you connect to a desktop running Windows 7 that’s hooked up to OnLive’s servers, and you can control it remotely, taking advantage of all of its applications.
The service has already been a huge hit for Microsoft Office users who have been taking advantage of the free Desktop Live app for a few months. But if you want a little more, the premium version may be well worth the $5 a month plan:

There is a slight problem with lag, according to MacRumors, so this is unlikely to provide you with seamless Flash gaming on your device. But it does handle Flash video relatively well. Of course, your experience will all depend on the speed of your Internet connection.
OnLive is planning to bring a “Pro” version of the app to the App Store soon, which will cost $9.99 a month and will allow users to access even more applications and upgrade their storage allowance from 2GB to 50GB.

T-Mobile reports big subscriber losses in Q4, says it will launch LTE in 2013

T-Mobile on Wednesday reported earnings for the company’s holiday quarter, which saw the carrier lose 802,000 customers causing revenue to drop 3.3% to $20.6 billion. The Deutsche Telekom-owned company is the only major U.S. carrier that does not carry Apple’s iPhone, which it blames for the defections, however T-Mobile is looking to bounce back with the launch of a 4G LTE network in 2013. “Though we are not satisfied with the contract customer losses and the decreased total revenues, the quarterly margin improvement year-on-year was impressive,” said CEO of Deutsche Telekom René Obermann. “The spectrum gained through the break-up fee empowers T-Mobile USA to start LTE-based services in key US markets and strengthens its competitiveness.” The company is the last major U.S. carrier to announce plans for an LTE network, with Verizon and AT&T already offering the service and Sprint preparing to launch its new network this year. T-MOBILE USA REPORTS FOURTH QUARTER 2011 OPERATING RESULTS
Strong adjusted OIBDA and prepaid performance; contract business negatively impacted in the fourth quarter of 2011 by iPhone 4S launches by three nationwide competitors
  • Adjusted OIBDA increased by 4.3% year-on-year to $1.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, adjusted OIBDA margin improved 2 percentage points year-on-year to 31% in the fourth quarter of 2011
  • Branded contract losses improved through the third quarter of 2011, however the launch of the iPhone 4S reversed this trend to a branded contract customer loss of 706,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011
  • Strong branded prepaid additions of 220,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, primarily due to continued success of unlimited Monthly 4G prepaid plans
  • Service revenues down 2.7% year-on-year to $4.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, due to branded contract customer losses and revenue effects from the shift to unlimited Value plans
  • Branded contract ARPU increased $2 year-on-year to $58 in the fourth quarter of 2011, mainly driven by an increase in data ARPU
  • Branded Data ARPU increased $2.70 year-on-year to $16.50 in the fourth quarter of 2011

T-Mobile USA, Inc. (“T-Mobile USA”) today reported fourth quarter 2011 results and provided an update on its annual assessment of indefinite-lived assets recorded in its financial statements.  In the fourth quarter of 2011, T-Mobile USA reported service revenues of $4.57 billion, down from $4.69 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010, and adjusted OIBDA of $1.40 billion, up from $1.34 billion reported in the fourth quarter of 2010.  Blended ARPU in the fourth quarter of 2011 was $46, consistent with the fourth quarter of 2010.  Additionally, net customer losses were 526,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to 23,000 net customer losses in the fourth quarter of 2010.

“In 2011, T-Mobile USA showed solid financial performance with a remarkable adjusted OIBDA turn-around in the second half of the year, despite nine challenging months during the pending acquisition. We further increased our 4G data speed to 42 Mbps, expanded our sales channels, launched 25 new 4G handsets and significantly improved our operational efficiency. As a result, adjusted OIBDA rose again year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2011 and branded data ARPU grew 20 percent year-on-year as smartphone adoption accelerated,” said Philipp Humm CEO and President of T-Mobile USA.  “However, not carrying the iPhone led to a significant increase in contract deactivations in the fourth quarter of 2011.  In 2012 and 2013, T-Mobile USA will invest to get the business back to growth, including an incremental $1.4 billion investment in its network modernization initiative, which will total a $4 billion investment over time.”

“Though we are not satisfied with the contract customer losses and the decreased total revenues, the quarterly margin improvement year-on-year was impressive.  The spectrum gained through the break-up fee empowers T-Mobile USA to start LTE-based services in key US markets and strengthens its competitiveness,” said René Obermann, CEO of Deutsche Telekom.

Total Customers
  • T-Mobile USA served 33.2 million customers (as defined in Note 1 to the Selected Data, below) at the end of fourth quarter 2011, compared to 33.7 million customers at both the end of third quarter 2011 and the end of fourth quarter 2010.
  • Fourth quarter 2011 net customer losses of 526,000, compared to net customer additions of 126,000 in the third quarter of 2011, and net customer losses of 23,000 in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • The sequential and year-on-year increase in customer losses is a result of intense competitive pressure from the launch of the iPhone 4S by three nationwide competitors in the fourth quarter of 2011.  In addition, higher connected device deactivations contributed significantly to the net customer loss in the fourth quarter of 2011, including a nearly 265,000 deactivation related to one customer with a yearly service revenue impact of less than $1 million.

Contract Customers
  • Contract net customer losses, including connected devices (as defined in Note 1 to the Selected Data, below), were 802,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to 186,000 net contract customer losses in the third quarter of 2011 and 251,000 net contract customer losses in the fourth quarter of 2010.
  • Branded contract net customer losses, excluding connected devices, were 706,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, a decline of 317,000 net branded contract customer losses from 389,000 in the third quarter of 2011.  Net branded contract customer losses were 364,000 in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Sequentially, the decline in branded net contract customers was driven primarily by higher branded contract deactivations as a result of the launch of the iPhone 4S by three nationwide competitors in mid-October.
    • The year-over-year change in branded contract gross customer additions resulted in part from competitive pressures and the implementation of strengthened credit standards as part of T-Mobile USA’s focus on improving the overall quality of its contract customer base.
  • Connected device net customer losses were 95,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to net customer additions of 204,000 in the third quarter of 2011 and net customer additions of 113,000 in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • The sequential and year-over-year change was driven by higher connected device customer deactivations during the fourth quarter of 2011.  Connected device customers, which have significantly lower ARPUs (averaging less than $2) than other contract customers, totaled 2.4 million at December 31, 2011.
Prepaid Customers
  • Prepaid net customer additions, including MVNO customers (as defined in Note 1 to the Selected Data, below), were 276,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, down from 312,000 net prepaid customer additions in the third quarter of 2011, and up from 229,000 net prepaid customer additions in the fourth quarter of 2010.
  • Branded prepaid net customer additions, excluding MVNO customers, were 220,000 in the fourth quarter of 2011, down 34,000 from third quarter 2011 branded prepaid net customer additions of 254,000, and improved by 365,000 from 145,000 net branded prepaid customer losses in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Sequentially, branded prepaid net customers declined due to churn from prepaid customers as a result of competitive offers introduced by T-Mobile USA’s competitors during the quarter.
    • The year-on-year growth in branded prepaid net customer additions was due primarily to growth in customer adoption of T-Mobile USA’s unlimited Monthly 4G prepaid plans.
  • MVNO customers increased slightly in the fourth quarter of 2011, totaling 3.6 million as of December 31, 2011. Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, MVNO net customer additions decreased due to fewer MVNO gross customer additions.

Churn
  • Blended churn (as defined in Note 3 to the Selected Data, below), reflecting both contract and prepaid customers, increased to 4.0% in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 3.5% in the third quarter of 2011 and 3.6% in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • The sequential and year-on-year increase in blended churn was primarily driven by higher churn from branded contract and connected device customers.
  • Churn from branded customers was 3.6% in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 3.2% in the third quarter of 2011, and 3.4% in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • The sequential and year-on-year increase was primarily due to higher churn of branded contract customers as a result of competitive market conditions and all of T-Mobile’s primary nationwide competitors offering the iPhone 4S in the fourth quarter of 2011. The year-on-year increase was partially offset by an improvement in prepaid branded churn as a result of unlimited Monthly 4G prepaid plans introduced in 2011.
  • Contract churn, including connected devices, was 3.1% in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from 2.4% in the third quarter of 2011 and 2.5% in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Sequentially and year-on-year contract churn was negatively impacted by competitors’ launches of the iPhone 4S, which is not offered by T-Mobile USA.
    • To address contract churn, T-Mobile USA continued to focus on loyalty efforts during the quarter, including a strong focus on re-contracting its most loyal customers.
  • Prepaid churn, including MVNO, decreased to 6.8% in the fourth quarter of 2011, from 7.2% in the third quarter of 2011 and 7.5% in the fourth quarter of 2010.
  • The sequential decrease in prepaid churn was driven primarily by fewer MVNO deactivations.
  • The year-on-year decrease in prepaid churn was driven primarily by the success of unlimited Monthly 4G prepaid plans introduced in 2011.

Adjusted OIBDA

  • T-Mobile USA reported Adjusted OIBDA (as defined in Note 8 to the Selected Data, below) of $1.40 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to $1.45 billion in the third quarter of 2011 and $1.34 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010.
  • Adjusted OIBDA margin (as defined in Note 9 to the Selected Data, below) was 31% in the fourth quarter of 2011, consistent with the third quarter of 2011 and up from 29% in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Year-on-year OIBDA margin improved primarily due to the reductions in equipment subsidies in connection with the new unlimited Value plans.
  • T-Mobile USA is currently performing its annual assessment of the indefinite-lived assets recorded in its financial statements.  T-Mobile USA anticipates that it will record a material non-cash impairment charge related to its indefinite-lived assets for the fourth quarter of 2011.  Any such charge would have no affect on either the Company’s current cash balance or future cash flows.  T-Mobile USA expects to include full financial statement results for the fourth quarter of 2011 in the earnings release for the first quarter of 2012 as a comparative period.
  • Adjusted OIBDA in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the third quarter of 2011 excludes AT&T transaction-related costs of $123 million and $51 million, respectively, primarily consisting of employee-related retention benefit expenses.
  • Sequentially, adjusted OIBDA decreased as a result of lower service revenues driven by branded customer losses and higher customer acquisition expenses.  This was offset by lower network operating expenses.  Third quarter of 2011 adjusted OIBDA had also benefitted by $29 million in connection with the discontinued retail partnership with RadioShack.
  • Year-on-year, adjusted OIBDA increased as a result of reduced losses from equipment subsidies due to the launch of the unlimited Value plans and continued cost management programs. Fourth quarter 2011 operating expenses, excluding the cost of equipment sales, remained consistent sequentially and year-on-year as cost savings programs in 2011 helped control expense growth.

Revenue 
  • Service revenues (as defined in Note 4 to the Selected Data, below) were $4.57 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, down from $4.67 billion in the third quarter of 2011 and $4.69 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Sequentially and year-on-year, quarterly service revenues decreased primarily due to contract customer losses, which were partially offset by the increased adoption of data plans in the contract and prepaid customer base.  Additionally, year-on-year service revenues were positively impacted by growth in revenues from providing handset insurance services to customers, which were insourced in the fourth quarter of 2010 and reconnection fees, which were introduced in the third quarter of 2011.
  • Service and Sales revenues (as defined in Note 13 to the Selected Data, below) were $5.1 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, down from $5.2 billion in the third quarter of 2011 and $5.3 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Service and Sales revenues decreased slightly from the third quarter of 2011 primarily due to contract customer losses as described above, partially offset by increased 3G/4G smartphone sales volumes.  The number of 3G/4G smartphones sold in the fourth quarter of 2011 increased to 2.6 million from 1.8 million in the third quarter of 2011 and 2.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2010.  3G/4G smartphones also accounted for a record 92% of equipment sales in the fourth quarter of 2011 compared to 77% in both the third quarter of 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, Service and Sales revenues decreased by 3.6% as fewer branded contract gross additions were partially offset by handset sales in connection with the introduction of T-Mobile USA’s new unlimited Value plans.
  • Total revenues, including service, equipment sales, and other revenues were $5.2 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, consistent with the third quarter of 2011 and down from $5.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, total revenues changed due primarily to contract customer losses as described above.

ARPU
  • Blended Average Revenue Per User (“ARPU” as defined in Note 4 to the Selected Data, below) was $46 in the fourth quarter of 2011, consistent with both the third quarter of 2011 and the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Both blended and contract ARPU benefitted from growing handset insurance revenues and from the introduction of reconnection fees.
  • Contract ARPU, including connected devices, was $53 in the fourth quarter of 2011, consistent with the third quarter of 2011 and up from $52 in the fourth quarter of 2010.  Branded contract ARPU, excluding connected devices, was $58 in the fourth quarter of 2011, down from $59 in the third quarter of 2011 and up from $56 in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • oYear-on-year, branded contract ARPU increased as data revenue growth more than offset lower voice revenue, which included effects from the shift to unlimited Value plans.
  • Prepaid ARPU, including MVNO, was $19 in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from $18 in the third quarter of 2011 and consistent with the fourth quarter of 2010.  Branded prepaid ARPU, excluding MVNO customers, was $25 in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from $24 in the third quarter of 2011 and consistent with the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • oQuarter-on-quarter, branded prepaid ARPU increased primarily due to the continued growth in unlimited Monthly 4G prepaid products.
  • Data service revenues (as defined in Note 4 to the Selected Data, below) were $1.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2011, up 9.9% from the fourth quarter of 2010.
  • Data service revenues in the fourth quarter of 2011 represented 31% of blended ARPU, or $14.20 per customer, compared to 30% of blended ARPU, or $14.00 per customer in the third quarter of 2011, and 28% of blended ARPU, or $12.80 per customer in the fourth quarter of 2010.  Branded data ARPU in the fourth quarter of 2011 amounted to $16.50 per branded customer, compared to $16.00 per branded customer in the third quarter of 2011 and $13.80 per branded customer in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • In the fourth quarter of 2011, the increase in the number of customers using smartphones, along with T-Mobile USA’s continued upgrade of its 3G and 4G networks helped drive Internet access revenue growth through the increased customer adoption of mobile broadband data plans.
    • 11.0 million customers were using smartphones enabled for the T-Mobile USA 3G/4G network (as defined in Note 12 to the Selected Data, below) such as the Samsung Galaxy S®II, the HTC Sensation™ 4G and the T-Mobile® myTouch™ 4G Slide.  This represents a net increase of over 34% or 2.8 million customers using smartphones from the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • 3G/4G smartphone customers now account for 40% of total branded customers, up from 36% in the third quarter of 2011 and 28% in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Messaging revenue (as described in Note 5 to the Selected Data, below) continued to be an important component of data service revenues.  Messaging accounted for approximately 31% of total data revenues in the fourth quarter of 2011, a decrease compared to 32% in the third quarter of 2011 and 36% in the fourth quarter of 2010 related to a shift in the data revenue mix towards mobile broadband data plans.   

CPGA and CCPU
  • The average cost of acquiring a customer, Cost Per Gross Add (“CPGA” as defined in Note 7 to the Selected Data, below) was $270 in the fourth quarter of 2011, up from $260 in the third quarter of 2011, but down from $290 in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Sequentially, CPGA increased in the fourth quarter of 2011 due primarily to a change in the customer mix towards branded customer additions and higher advertising costs.
    • Year-on-year, CPGA decreased in the fourth quarter of 2011 due primarily to lower handset subsidies as a result of T-Mobile USA’s new unlimited Value plans, which do not bundle subsidized handsets as in traditional wireless service contracts.
  • The average cash cost of serving customers, Cash Cost Per User (“CCPU” as defined in Note 6 to the Selected Data, below), was $23 per customer per month in the fourth quarter of 2011, consistent with the third quarter of 2011 and down from $24 in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Year-on-year, CCPU decreased in the fourth quarter of 2011 due primarily to lower handset upgrade subsidies as a result of T-Mobile USA’s new unlimited Value plans.

Capital Expenditures
  • Cash capital expenditures (as defined in Note 10 to the Selected Data, below) were $2.7 billion in 2011, fairly consistent with $2.8 billion in 2010.
    • In 2011, cash capital expenditures were driven by the continued build-out of the HSPA+ 21 and HSPA+ 42 networks (as defined in Note 11 to the Selected Data, below).
  • Cash capital expenditures were $551 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, compared to $741 million in the third quarter of 2011 and $828 million in the fourth quarter of 2010.
    • Sequentially and year-on-year, the decrease in cash capital expenditures was a result of lower expenditures related to the buildout of the HSPA+ 42 network.
    • To further improve the value provided to customers through its 4G mobile broadband network, T-Mobile USA has continued to invest in its HSPA+ 42 network, which reached over 184 million people as of the end of the fourth quarter of 2011, doubling the theoretical speed of its 4G network to 42 Mbps.

T-Mobile USA Recent Highlights
  • On March 20, 2011, Deutsche Telekom AG and AT&T Inc. entered into a definitive agreement under which AT&T proposed to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $39 billion, subject to adjustment in accordance with the agreement.  In the third quarter of 2011, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a complaint in the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia to block the acquisition.  On November 24, 2011, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom withdrew their pending applications at the Federal Communications Commission (“FCC”) for the transfer of T-Mobile USA spectrum licenses to AT&T as part of AT&T’s acquisition of T-Mobile USA.   On December 20, 2011, AT&T and Deutsche Telekom jointly announced the termination of the agreement on the sale of T-Mobile USA.  As a result, AT&T made a $3.0 billion cash payment to Deutsche Telekom in December 2011.  The break-up consideration due to Deutsche Telekom under the terminated Stock Purchase Agreement also included significant Advanced Wireless Services (“AWS”) spectrum and a long term agreement on Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems (“UMTS”) roaming within the USA.  T-Mobile USA incurred transaction-related costs in 2011 that primarily reflect incremental personnel costs as a result of the formerly proposed deal.
  • T-Mobile USA and AT&T Inc. have jointly filed a request with the FCC for approval of the AWS spectrum transfer noted above, which resulted from the termination of the agreement on the sale of T-Mobile USA.  This spectrum will increase T-Mobile USA’s average spectrum holdings in the Top 100 markets from approximately 54 to approximately 60 MHz.
  • T-Mobile USA continues to unveil cutting edge devices including 42 Mbps-capable smartphones such as the T-Mobile® myTouch® Q, the HTC® Amaze™ 4G and the Samsung Galaxy S® II and new 4G tablets such as the T-Mobile® SpringBoard™ with Google™  and the Samsung Galaxy Tab™ 10.1 and the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S® Blaze™ 4G.
  • T-Mobile USA announced it will invest $4 billion in total to strengthen its 4G network by installing new equipment at 37,000 cell sites and deploying HSPA+ in its PCS (1900) spectrum band. This spectrum re-farming effort, combined with the AWS spectrum T-Mobile USA will receive due to the termination of the AT&T transaction (subject to FCC approval), will allow the deployment of long-term evolution (LTE) service on AWS spectrum in 2013. This anticipated network transformation will significantly enhance coverage and performance for customers.

HTC One X Tegra 3 Android Smartphone Photo Leaked



HTC has been teasing what they are going to unveil at MWC 2012 next week, one of those devices is the new HTC One X, which is reported to be HTC’s first quad core Android smartphone.

Now we have our first press shot of the HTC One X,  and the device is reported to come with a quad core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.
Other specifications on the HTC One X include Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, plus a 4.7 inch Super LCD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels.

The device is also reported top come with an 8 megapixel camera which will be able to record full high definition video in 1080p and will also feature a front facing 1.3 megapixel camera.

As soon as we get some full specifications, and some more photos on the HTC One X we will let you guys know.

Samsung announces the rugged Rugby Smart, coming to AT&T March 4


Just a few days after the first images of the phone leaked online, Samsung has officially announced their rugged Rugby Smart handset. The mid-range Android 2.3 handset features a 3.7-inch display, 5MP camera, and 4GB of internal storage and is military spec 810f compliant. The phone can take a dunk under 1m of water for up to 30 minutes, is dustproof, and is capable of withstanding temperature extremes. The Rugby Smart is being touted as 4G, but it isn’t of the LTE variety. The handset is coming to AT&T’s HSPA+ network on March 4th at a price of $99.99 on a two-year contract.

HTC Evo Shift 4G and White EVO 3D Set to Hit End of Life?

It looks like a couple of Sprint’s devices are about to hit end of life. One of them is quite recent. It’s the white edition of the HTC EVO 3D. Looks like black is the more popular choice with that particular phone as that version is safe. The EVO Shift 4G is also on the list. It was a mid-range alternative to the main EVO line with its unique keyboard compared to other EVO devices.
Remember, just because these devices will soon be off store shelves doesn’t mean you won’t be able to buy it elsewhere or get software updates. That’s especially important for those of you with the white EVO 3D as that device is set to get Ice Cream Sandwich sometime soon. [via SprintFeed]

ASUS Transformer Prime bootloader unlocking tool now available


As promised, ASUS has released a bootloader unlocking tool for the Transformer Prime. The tool is packaged in an APK that can be downloaded from the company’s website. Once downloaded and installed, the Transformer Prime will have the ability to run custom ROMS, however ASUS warns that unlocking your bootloader will void your warranty. “Once you activate the [unlock app] you will not be able to recover your ASUS product (“Original Product”) back to original locked conditions,” ASUS stated. “You also acknowledge ASUS does not guarantee service satisfaction to any Revised Product, including events involving paid service requested by you to be performed to the Revised Product.”



WIND officially releases the HTC Radar



Here it is, WIND Mobile’s first Windows Phone 7 powered device, the HTC Radar. As revealed last week this this is now available and “in stock” for $99 on WINDtab+ or $399 outright. The WP7 device is described as an “intuitive phone that keeps it all on your radar and lets you get real-time close… with everything”. Specs have the Radar coming with a 3.8-inch display that has a resolution of 480 x 800, 1GHz processor, 5 megapixel camera that captures 720p HD videos, and is made of one “single piece of polished metal”. Overall weight is 137g and has a 1520mAH battery.

What to expect at MWC 2012 from Google

Next to Samsung and Microsoft, Google is probably one of the biggest players at this year’s Mobile World Congress 2012 expo.
Never ones to disappoint, Google has even launched a microsite that counts down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until things officially get underway.
So what will Google be launching?
This is a good question. But it’s one without any real concrete answers, at present. For instance we can’t see Google launching another Android update, having only released Ice Cream Sandwich four months ago.
Then there's the fact that Android 4.0 is only powering about one per cent of Android devices with the rest being on Gingerbread, Honeycomb and Froyo.
So whatever Google launches will come as a surprise. Here's our breakdown of what the search could potentially launch or debut at MWC 2012.
Chrome for Android announcement
Google is currently in the process of folding aspects of its Chrome OS into Android 5.0 AKA Jelly Bean for the purpose of dual booting the operating system on Windows 8-powered notebooks, tablets and netbooks, according to leaked information for Asia.

Could this mean that Google will demo some aspects of Android 5.0’s features ahead of its official launch at its I/O 2012 event in June? It’s possible – not particularly likely, mind you – but still kind of in the realm of possibility. It’d also detract from Canonical’s MWC launch of Ubuntu for Android, which sets out to do something very similar to what Google allegedly has in mind for Jelly Bean.

Google Music 
Google announced Google Music at its 2012 Google I/O developer conference. Originally called Google Music Beta, the service offered Android users the ability to store their music collections on Google’s cloud servers and stream then down to any gadget carrying Android.
Google announced deals with Universal Music Group, EMI, and Sony Music Entertainment when it launched the service. But what Google failed to confirm was when the service would be available for users outside the US. It’s been almost seven months now and we’re still none the wiser here in the UK.

So is an EMEA launch of Google’s Music service on the cards for MWC 2012? Maybe – Google does need to push the service out across Europe. And what better way to confirm this than at MWC 2012 in Barcelona?


Nexus Tab
Google chairman Eric Schmidt confirmed not so long ago that the company is working on a premium-grade tablet device, dubbed the Nexus Tab, which will apparently hit markets in Q2 of 2012.
Speaking to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, Schmidt said: ‘In the next six months we plan to market a tablet of the highest quality.’ Schmidt made this comment back in December 2011. Six months on from December is June, which is when Google’s I/O 2012 event is scheduled to take place.

Now, we fully expect Google to launch the Nexus Tab, along with Android Jelly bean, at I/O 2012 in June – that’s pretty much a given. But could we get a preview of the slate at MWC 2012? We’d say there’s something like a 20 per cent chance of that happening, which aren’t exactly great odds. Still though – 20 per cent is better than nothing, right?
Google Home Entertainment device
Not so long ago we reported that Google was working on an Android-powered Home Entertainment system that would act as a general hub for your TV, smartphone, stereo and tablet. We imagine it’ll be a lot like Apple TV just with fewer restrictions and more features. It’d also be nice if Google made it cross-platform as well so you could use it with Windows Phone and iOS-powered devices too.
Here’s our report from February 10:
‘The Wall Street Journal claims that Google Inc. is developing a home-entertainment system that streams music wirelessly throughout the home and would be marketed under the company's own brand.'
'There are a variety of Android applications and computer-based programmes already available that will work in conjunction with Google’s Android platform but this is the first time Google has been officially linked with an Android home-entertainment project.’

The WSJ claims that Google will release the Entertainment Hub ‘later on in the year,’ which could mean Q4, Q3 or next month. This means that a possible demo of the product or, failing that, an official statement regarding the product, could very well be on the cards for MWC 2012.
Google X Glasses
Last but not least on our dubious list of possible MWC 2012 Google launches is the search giant’s much talked about Android-powered X Glasses. Little more than a month ago reports emerged suggesting that Google’s X Labs were working on a set of Android-powered glasses that utilised augmented reality.
Since then the internet has been aflame with Android aficionados discussing and speculating about just what was possible with a pair of Android-powered spectacles. Personally we think the idea is stupid – but at least Google’s trying something different.
X-Glasses
A more recent report in The New York Times has now surfaced regarding Google’s X Glasses, which claimed that the glasses will have a low-resolution built-in camera that will be able to monitor the world in real time and overlay information about locations, surrounding buildings and friends who might be nearby, according to the Google employees.
The report said: ‘Internally, the Google X team has been actively discussing the privacy implications of the glasses and the company wants to ensure that people know if they are being recorded by someone wearing a pair of glasses with a built-in camera.'
Allegedly the glasses are currently being developed in Google's secretive, high-tech and improbably named ‘X Lab'.
The report claimed the glasses will ‘tap into a number of Google software producst that are current available and in use today,' but will use a heads-up-display (HUD) to show the information in augmented reality:
‘The glasses will send data to the cloud and then use things like Google Latitude to share location, Google Goggles to search images and figure out what is being looked at, and Google Maps to show other things nearby, the Google employee said.'
One source reportedly stated: ‘You will be able to check in to locations with your friends through the glasses.'
The New York Times said Google doesn't currently have a planned business model for the glasses. Instead this is a very experimental project. Supposedly Google will launch the X glasses ‘as is', gauge the consumer reaction and then plan around that.
We’d love to see these spectacles in action at MWC 2012. Unfortunately the likelihood of this actually happening is pretty damn slim, considering that Google has yet to even officially confirm that it’s even working on such a product.



Acer Iconia Tab A100 And A500 To Get Android 4.0 ICS Update In April

Acer recently rolled out the android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for their Iconia Tab A200tablet, and now we have some details on when ICS will be hitting some other Acer tablets.

Acer has announced on Twitter that the Iconia Tab A500 and Iconia Tab A100 will be getting the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update in the middle of April.

There is no specific date in April on when the android 4.0 ICS update will be released for the Acer Iconia Tab A500 and Iconia Tab A100, as soon as we get some more information we will let you guys know.


The Beatles Release 24 Songs As iPhone Ringtones



A few weekends ago, I had some friends over, and we all got drunk and played Beatles Rock Band for a fun couple of hours. It was great. There really is something for everyone in the Beatles’ music catalogue.
One particularly funny moment came as I was singing “I Am The Walrus.” John Lennon has always claimed that the song is a blistering parody of caterwauling crooner Bob Dylan’s nonsense lyrics, but a friend of mine made an utterly bizarre case that the song is, instead, a subversive anthem in support of polysexual sodomy… an interesting interpretation, to say the least.
The key to the interpretation, he argued, is the chorus line. “Ooompah oompah! Stick it in your jumper. Everyone has one,” my friend quoted, his eyes bulging meaningfully. I found the whole exchange so funny that I immediately made myself an iPhone ringtone of the appropriate section of the song.
On a tangentially related note, The Fab Four has just released their first ever batch of iTunes ringtones. “I Am The Walrus” isn’t there, making my ringtone unique and signaling a conspiracy, but there are a ton of good songs available. Full list below.

Verizon’s 4G LTE network suffers nationwide outage


We have received a number of reports this morning from Verizon Wireless customers complaining that the carrier’s 4G LTE network was down in various parts of the country. The carrier’s support forums have also been flooded with complaints from irate users who claim the service is down across the country, and Verizon customers service representatives have reportedly confirmed the outage to a number of subscribers. Verizon customers have suffered from data problems before — the carrier recently had three massive outages in a single month.


Quad-core LG X3 could launch as Optimus 4X HD


Just as LG’s first dual-core handset denoted its power with the Optimus 2X name, so will the manufacturer’s first quad-core phone, PocketNow reports. The phone rumored as the LG X3, which is said to feature a 4.7-inch 720p display, will honor the four magnitudes of power provided by its Tegra 3 processor when it launches as the LG Optimus 4X HD. The name seems like a no-brainer when taking LG’s previous releases into account.
References to a T-Mobile G4X have recently been spotted, suggesting that the sequel to the Optimus 2X will also make its way to that network. The T-Mobile G2X was the carrier’s branding for last year’s model.
LG has been busy announcing a few of their handsets, including the Optimus 3D Max and Optimus 3D Cube, ahead of Mobile World Congress, but we suspect they will keep their biggest new addition under cover until their press conference in Barcelona this Sunday.


Sony PlayStation Vita 3G Lands On Vodafone UK



The guys over at Vodafone just dropped is an email to let us know that the Sony PlayStationVita 3G is now available on their network in the UK, and the PS Vita 3G is available exclusively through Vodafone here in the UK.

Vodafone are offering the PlayStation Vita 3G for £279, and it comes with 4GB of storage, plus a pay as you go SIM card, WipEout 2048, when you top up the SIM card with £5 of data.



The PlayStation Vita 3G introduces the new pre-installed NEAR application which provides an array of new social gaming services not currently available on any other portable gaming console. This includes location based services and real social gaming on the move, allowing users to comment on and recommend games as well as track their friends’ locations through the inbuilt GPS which is exclusive to 3G models only.
