Images of the PlayBook keyboard case and Docking Station surface, plus the “Mythical” 10-inch Playbook spotted

Last week at BlackBerry DevCon Europe there was much talk about the BlackBerry myths out there, but what also surfaced was a couple OEM PlayBook accessories, specifically a docking station and the BlackBerry PlayBook keyboard case – both make the “World’s first Professional tablet” look pretty good. According to BlackBerryCzech who snapped the pics, the Bluetooth keyboard case “looks great and works especially well”, includes a touchpad that supports multi-touch gestures. There’s no indication on any other specs, but supposedly has a 30-day battery life and it’ll add a bit more weight. The docking station looks like a brick. Not sure how much that weighs, but it certainly gets thePlayBook to sit up straight. The docking station connects via HDMI and comes with a LAN network port for when you’re without Wi-Fi, plus has all the usual USB ports.

RIM has been rumoured to be working on a 10-inch PlayBook and this apparently popped up at the same time the pics were taken. BlackBerryCzech reportedly said they’ve seen the “Mythical ten-inch tablet BlackBerry playbook”, but can’t disclose any other information on it, nor pics.

In addition, this is the week that PlayBook 2.0 is expected to drop – look out for Friday, February 17th as this is the latest rumoured date.

Now comes the news that the Razer Blade has already sold out in just 30 minutes. The company announced on its Facebook page that within 30 minutes of it opening orders for the gaming notebook, the device was sold out. Unique to the notebook is its switchblade multitouch trackpad which is highly customizable for a myriad of tasks. At $2,799, the Razer Blade is not a value for money product, but guess what it has already sold out in 30 minutes (the vendor has not revealed the number of units sold, though). I guess PC gaming is still alive and kicking!

Acer To Launch $699 Ultrabooks This Year

Ultrabooks were popular at this years CES, although most of the models we have seem so far are higher priced around the $1,000 and above mark, Intel has been looking to get the price of these new notebooks down.

One company that intends to launch a range of more budget friendly ultrabooks this year isAcer, and the company has announced that will be introducing new ultrabooks in the $699 to $799 price range.

Although these new ultrabooks will be cheaper, Acer are looking to concentrate less on price and more on the actual user experience of the device, as the company’s president said that the high end and low end markets are dominated by Apple and Amazon at the moment.

Acer has said that they will be focusing on mid range devices, which offer a wide range of features for a lower price, and if Acer do manage to produce decent ultrabooks in this price range then other manufacturers are bound to follow, this will reduce the price of ultrabooks overall, which would be good news for consumers.

Create.Work.Inspire – Hands-on with Dell XPS 13 ultrabook (video)

We’ve been having a great time at the Dell-sponsored Create.Work.Inspire talking about the intersection of art and technology but one of the main reasons I came here was to get some time with the Dell XPS 13 ultrabook.
While the IntoMobile team is all about the mobile lifestyle, I cannot work on the road on just a tablet and smartphone. Maybe that will change in the near future but I still need the power and keyboard of laptop. That doesn’t mean I want to sacrifice portability or looks, though.
Luckily, the Dell XPS 13 seems to come through on all counts, as it’s a stylish computer that’s light, portable and packed full of power. The brushed aluminum cover will definitely remind you of the devices that comes from Cupetino but Dell has done enough to make the XPS 13 stand out. The bottom and wrist rests feel like they’re made of polycarbonate and it makes for a light (less than three pounds) and good-looking body.
The keyboard is absolutely great. It’s well spaced out, the travel back is amazing and it feels like it can stand up to a pounding. There’s a 13.3-inch bezel-to-bezel display with Gorilla Glass and the power part is not a problem with the second-gen Intel processor inside. You can also look for a camera, Bluetooth, 128 GB and 256 GB SSD models and nearly everything else you’d expect from a device of this class.
Unfortunately, there aren’t enough USB ports for my liking, as you have to deal with two. I would have also loved a built-in card reader too. Still, these are minor complaints.
You can find out more about the Dell XPS 13 here.

Google Brings 27,000 Chromebooks To Schools In The US

Google has announced that the company is bringing more than 27,0000 of its Chromebook notebooks to schools in the US, the news was announced at the Florida Educational Technology Conference.

According to Google, hundreds of schools in 41 states across the US are using one or more of Google’s Chromebooks in the classroom, and they have also said that three school districts will have one available for each pupil, with a total of 27,000 going to Illinois, Iowa and South Carolina.

“From my perspective, Chromebooks couldn’t get any simpler; setting up this many laptops would have typically taken our team at least 3 months. And from the instructional side, we are teaching content not technology, and Chromebooks simply support teachers in what they do best while giving students the resources they need to be productive citizens. As just one example the quality of work that students turn in has improved literally overnight – from incomplete sentences to full paragraphs, in some cases – because they are much more engaged and participating readily in class.”

Google is obviously hoping that its Chromebook will become popular in the classroom, you can find out more information over at the Google Blog.

Acer Aspire Timeline X 5830T-Review

Acer's Timeline small business laptops mix both business and pleasure; you get a good quality, if a little basic, machine for not much cash. The latest 15-inch model adds good looks to the mix, along with a Sandy Bridge Core i3 processor and plenty of memory.

Unless you’re forking out for a custom colour, laptops are usually black, silver, or if you're really lucky, white. So it's nice to see Acer taking a different approach to the look-and-feel with the Timeline X.

Our sample machine was a tasteful metallic blue, with a metal surround around the recessed keyboard and the large speaker grille. There's a black bezel around the glossy screen, and a dark blue metallic lid. Underneath, the body is a dark black plastic with plenty of ventilation grilles.

Keyboard and trackpad

Acer uses the same isloated keyboard in the Timeline X as in many of its recent laptops. That means you get a comfortable typing surface, with good travel and responsive keys. On the downside, Acer's unusual and frankly unwelcome compressed combinations of shift and and # and enter are here too. The arrow keys are separate though - handy as they double as volume and brightness controls – and are located under the right shift key, making them easy to reach for gaming. If you need larger directional keys, you can reach for the numeric keypad.

As usual, the function keys double as system controls, for Wi-Fi, sleep and with basic play/pause media controls. Press the tiny P button by the speaker grille to open Acer's launch manager and configure an application or web site to associate with the button in future.

There are very few indicator lights. The biggest is the blue LED behind the power button, and there are three small LEDs on the front of the Timeline X for power, Wi-Fi and disk activity.

Like many other laptops, the Timeline X has a Synaptics multi-touch trackpad. The style of this is well-integrated with the blue case, with a wide screen aspect ratio that simplifies moving around the large screen. While it's wide, it's not very tall - and it’s really a little too small - so you’ll need to invest in a mouse for when you want more precision. You get the usual two finger scrolling and pinch zoom plus a two finger flick for browser or image navigation, but no three finger gestures - which would have been difficult to use in the restricted space of the trackpad anyway.

Screen

The glossy 15.6-inch screen has a standard WXGA 1366x768 resolution, ideal for 720p video. And while the display is clear and crisp there's a lot of reflection from the glossy glass - so this is definitely an indoor laptop - although the viewing angle is wide enough that you can usually avoid reflections. Picture quality was good, with a 1080p YouTube video showing good detail and downscaling with no artefacts, and a 720p video streaming cleanly from a local network source.

We'd have preferred a higher resolution screen, as icons and text seem a little too large on this size panel, but this is a budget system. Audio quality is good, with Dolby sound processing and a large speaker under a metal grille behind the keyboard.

The selection of ports is decent for the price, but there are none of the more unusual connectors of business notebooks. Sandy Bridge means that's there's a single USB 3.0 port on the left (along with HDMI, VGA, and gigabit Ethernet). On the right you'll find three USB 2.0 ports, one of which can be used to charge devices even when your laptop is turned off, and a DVD-RW optical disk burner. On the front is a multi-format card reader and if you've bought a 3G version, the SIM card port is on the back, just behind where the screen drops down below the body.

A slight lack of power

A Core i3 processor means that there's enough power for everyday tasks, and you'll get good performance when working with the Web, or using Office. Don't expect the same performance when you're playing games though, as there's only the built-in Intel HD graphics.

With 6GB of RAM you've got more than enough memory for everyday use, and with the 640GB hard disk, there's plenty of storage to go along.

Battery life

Battery life is excellent. Using a balanced power profile, and with Wi-fi and using the Timeline X for basic browsing, with minimal streaming of video and audio, we got just under 5 and a half hours of usage. You should expect to get most, if not all, of a working day with Wi-Fi off when on the road.

One thing to note about the Timeline X: the battery isn't removable. There's a pinhole on the bottom which hides a button that simulates disconnecting and reconnecting the battery, in case you need to reset the system without using the power button.
Usual annoyance of pre-installed software

Acer bundles a lot of software with the Timeline X. Most of it isn't much use, but you'll find the usual Office 2010 Starter and Windows Live Essentials to get you started, along with security and entertainment software. There's also the useful Clear.fi media sharing software, which makes the Timeline part of a home entertainment system wherever it is in the house.

We were pleased to see that most of the bundled software was in installer form only, and isn't installed until you're ready to use it, so there are fewer startup tasks slowing things down

Verdict

The latest model of Acer's small business laptop is a good looking machine, with much of the power you need - and at a very reasonable price for its specification.

We liked its looks, and were surprised to find just how light it was. The integrated battery could be an issue, but with more than five hours of battery life, it's not something that should be much of a problem.

Samsung Series 5 ultrabooks announced for South Korea

So far ultrabooks have usually been in the 11-13” range, but Samsung has decided to defy convention by unveiling a 14” ultrabook (and seemingly stretching the definition of an ultrabook) alongside a 13” model under their Series 5 title, which so far has been reserved for Samsung’s Chrome OS-based Chromebook series.
Both models will be made out of aluminum, with the 13” measuring in at 14.9mm thick and weighing 1.4kg. It will feature an Intel Core i5 processor, up to 8GB of RAM and will sport a 500GB HDD as opposed to SSD options that are commonly found on ultrabooks. The 14” model will feature similar specs too, except instead of 500GB, it will feature a 1TB HDD instead.
It will weigh 1.8kg and will be 20.9mm thick and surprisingly will come with an optical drive. An odd move considering that optical drives tend to add a bit of thickness to the overall dimensions, but if you absolutely need the optical drive and don’t mind the extra weight or thickness, then the 14” Samsung Series 5 ultrabook ought to do the trick.
Both the 13” and 14” models are expected to launch in South Korea by the end of the month and will go for ₩1.49 million (~$1,300) and ₩1.54 million (~$1,345) respectively. No word on when they will be launched stateside, but we expect that these ultrabooks could be unveiled during CES 2012, so check back with us then for a possible international release date and pricing.

Lenovo's rugged ThinkPad X130e targets the education market, arrives December 20 for $469

When we first spotted leaked photos of Lenovo's ThinkPad X130e, we just kind of assumed it was the next-gen successor to the X120e, which we reviewed almost a year ago. Well, you know what happens when you A-S-S-U-M-E, right? Turns out, there is indeed an X130e, but it's intended specifically for classrooms. The company just made its official announcement, and explained that that rugged designwe've been hearing about isn't meant to protect it from careless baggage handlers at the airport so much as freewheeling six year-olds. Though Lenovo's already had a hand in Intel's Classmate project, this is the first time it's released a classroom-ready laptop under the ThinkPad brand, red pointing stick and all.

Of all the kid-proof touches, the more obvious ones include a rubber bumper ringing the plastic chassis, along with a thicker bezel shielded by 1.2mm of plastic. It also has recessed, reinforced ports, an accelerometer to protect the hard drive and a hinge rated for 30,000 cycles. Of course, the result of all this ruggedizing is that the X130e is fairly heavy for an 11-incher, at 3.9 pounds (1.78kg). Otherwise, though, its specs are pretty much what you'd expect in an 11.6-inch laptop. For starters, it's offered with an Intel Core i3-2367M processor, as well as AMD Fusion E-300 and E-450 APUs. It comes with 2GB of RAM (upgradeable to 8GB), up to 500GB in storage, Bluetooth 3.0 and a 6-cell battery rated for 8.5 hours of battery life. Lenovo's also added its RapidBoot technology, promising a sub-20-second startup time. It also has three USB 2.0 sockets, HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, a combined headphone / mic port and a 4-in-1 memory card reader. And, because Lenovo is selling these to schools and not individuals, it'll customize the laptops by tweaking the BIOS and tricking out the lid in assorted colors. It'll go on sale December 20th starting at $469, and in the meantime, we've got some press photos below -- after all, just because you personally can't buy one, doesn't mean you can't look, right?

LG unveils Z330 ultrabook

With ASUS, Acer and Lenovo attempting ultrabooks of their own, we can’t say that we’re too surprised to find out that LG has decided to hop on board the ultrabook bandwagon as well with their Z330 ultrabook, a new addition to their Xnote line.

On first glance you could be forgiven for mistaking it as Apple’s MacBook Air, which based on the success of the MacBook Air is a good thing! Much like the other ultrabooks in the market, LG’s Z330 will feature a 13” display with LG claiming the ultrabook weighs under 2.7 pounds and is only 0.6” thin.

Based on the user’s needs, they will be able to choose between a 1.6GHz Intel Core i5 or 1.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor. It will also come in either 120GB or 256GB SSD sizes, integrated Intel HD graphics, USB 3.0 ports, a microSD card reader, Bluetooth 3.0+HS and WiFi connectivity.

LG is also boasting that the Z330 can wake from sleep in just about 7 seconds. Interested in getting your hands on LG’s ultrabook offering? The ultrabook is expected to be priced between $1,509-$1,863 and will be arriving in South Korea in the middle of this month. No word if LG has plans to bring the Z330 stateside, but given how Intel is pushing the ultrabook standard pretty hard, we don’t see why LG wouldn’t want to gain a larger audience with their ultrabook offering.
