The first Jesus Slate – or “iPad”, if you prefer – touched down in April 2010, and its successor – which introduced front and rear cameras and a dual-core processor – landed less than a year later, in March 2011.
Now we’re hearing from Digitimes that the next generation iPad is expected to burst forth from Apple's groin in three to four months. Not exactly a huge stretch of the old imagination.
Digitimes reports that supply chain crews have starting cranking things up a notch with regards to the iPad 3, while winding things down in iPad 2 town.
Specifically, 14-15 million iPad 2 units will be shipped in Q4 2011, reducing quite dramatically to just 4-5 million (“just”, he says!) in Q1 2012AD.
Citigroup Global Markets analyst Kevin Chang tells the Commercial Times that Foxconn, which has sadly been plagued with a continuing spate of suicides, will start producing iPad 3s in January 2012, before going into overdrive in February.
Around 9.5-9.8 million iPad 3s are expected to ship in Q1 2012, while iPad 2 sales for 2011 are “likely” to reach 40 million according to sources.
The rumour mill has pinned a 2048x1536 resolution on the iPad 3. Not quite Retina (326 PPI), but still a significant jump from the iPad 2’s 1024x768 resolution.
