Microsoft paid Nokia $250 million to promote Windows Phone in Q4 of 2011

While Nokia’s Q4 report did not open a Pandora’s box, it did manage to spring in a few surprising factoids.  The most interesting was the $250 million “Platform support Payment” that Microsoft in Nokia’s favor to use Windows Phone in Q4 of 2011. While Nokia pays Microsoft a licensing fee like all other Windows Phone OEMs it does appear that due to the special relationship Nokia harbors with Redmond, they could perhaps be paying much less than any other OEM. Previously it has been reported that Microsoft paid Nokia an unspecified amount in the billions to use Windows Phone, perhaps these quarterly Platform support payments could be a fruition of this very agreement, infact Nokia has officially stated that this payment was the first amongst many.
